Occupational Summary
Represent the Controller's office on any matters pertinent to the Corporate Payments function including accounts payable and employee travel and reimbursements, interacting with all levels of the senior administration of Duke, including DUHS, as necessary.
Work Performed
Responsible for the leadership and development of a highly effective team who serve as collaborative partners supporting the processing of vendor and employee travel and reimbursement payments. Ensure human resources are aligned with critical tasks, provide timely and relevant employee feedback, develop targeted talent development plans, and develop succession plans for critical staff positions ensuring organizational continuity over time.
Supervise and coordinate work of designated employees; manage various personnel functions including but not limited to hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules. Maintain and develop performance standards and reporting to monitor employee's adherence to the standards.
Develop and ensure achievement of annual departmental goals designed to enhance the department's support to the Duke Community.
Continually assess the efficiency and effectiveness of Corporate Payment processes, streamlining workflows through system effectiveness maximization, outsourcing, and technology; develop, implement, and communicate process improvements.
Generate, review, and provide to senior management detailed operating metrics that reflect the performance of the processing teams, as well as the status of Duke's procurement and expense reimbursement processes more generally.
Coordinate with other departments within the Finance Division and DUHS Corporate Finance to ensure that expense accruals are appropriately recorded for financial reporting purposes at year end.
Develop various communications for distribution to decentralized business managers and other key Accounts Payable and Employee Travel and Reimbursement contacts throughout Duke regarding business process changes, system updates, etc.
Promote the development and execution of related training programs for University (including School of Medicine) and DUHS personnel.
Communicate with the Associate Vice President/Controller as appropriate regarding departmental issues/ strategy/ operations/ issues.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Work requires knowledge of accounting principles generally acquired through a bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration or a directly related field. Advance degree or professional certification (e.g. CPA) preferred.
Experience
Work generally requires ten (10) years of experience in an accounts payable office to become knowledgeable of accepted accounting and accounts payable practices involved in managing and processing accurate and timely payment of University vendors and ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
