Occupational Summary

The Associate Clinical Director is an essential member of the Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) Leadership Team. Reporting to the Director of CAPS, they are primary lead for clinical services within CAPS. This position is administratively responsible for oversight of CAPS' clinical services including individual, group, and couples counseling, and crisis intervention. This position ensures compliance with The International Association of Counseling Services; monitors multidisciplinary consultation teams; creatively develops cutting-edge service delivery options; and monitors client assignment and referral. Monitors clinician adherence to established policies and procedures and provides or facilitates training based on staff needs. Manages CAPS in the absence of the Director. The Clinical Director is responsible for administrative supervision of an assigned clinician team. Acquires and manages feedback regarding staff performance and completes timely annual evaluations for those staff over whom they are administratively responsible. Is actively involved in crisis management services and hospitalization of clients. Provides age-appropriate psychological care to eligible members of the University community. Supports the Mission, Vision, and Values of CAPS, and Duke University.

Work Performed

Clinical Leadership, Personnel Management & Policy Development: Works with the Leadership team and the Counseling Director to conceptualize the scope and design of optimal service delivery and directs the operational needs of Clinical Services. Provides leadership for staffing clinical services and the provision of supervision to direct reports. In partnership with the Assistant Director of TRAC (Triage, Referral, Access, and Crisis) Plays a key role in the optimization of access to services as well as monitoring the quality of services. Supports the Assistant Director of Training with integration of trainees and training curricula into the spectrum of clinical services. Participates in the Leadership Team in the overall management and administration of all CAPS services. Takes a lead role in Clinical P&P and maintains appropriate policies on clinical services. As a member of the Leadership Team, participates in general policy development for CAPS.

Client/Patient Direct and Support Services: Provision of primary (mental health outreach), secondary, and tertiary counseling services to eligible members of the Duke community within the CAPS scope of service. Performs initial consultation evaluations (routine, urgent, and crisis) based on the referring problem. Evaluations focus on arriving at a preliminary diagnosis, an integrated treatment plan, or appropriate referral. Provide consultation within the legal boundaries of release- of-information. Consistent with UHC & CAPS Policy & Procedure manuals, develop idiosyncratic treatment plan based on an investigation of empirically supported treatment options, make appropriate referrals, and accurately document treatment provided. Provide clinical supervision and consultation.

Administrative Tasks and Meetings: Be an active, respectful, and engaged member of CAPS team and work groups. Understands and assesses with other members of the Leadership Team International Association of Counseling Services. Actively reviews and seeks to improve services to eligible members of the Duke community. Participate in research projects.

Professional Development & Peer Consultation: Attend staff and other assigned clinical meetings/committees. Maintain professional licensure. Support development of CAPS staff. Other duties as required.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Doctoral degree in Psychology from an accredited educational institution; or a master's degree in social work, counseling, or related field from an accredited program. Doctoral degree preferred. Must hold full licensure and supervision credential in your current state and be eligible for a license in NC within one year.

Experience

Required: 8+ years of progressive experience in clinical leadership, demonstrated excellent clinical and leadership skills. A doctoral degree can be substituted for two years of the required experience.

Preferred: Four or more years' experience in the evaluation and treatment of individuals whose age and psychological development are similar to traditional and non-traditional college students.

Training and four years or more of experience working with individuals from traditionally underserved populations first generation, LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, Latinx, international, veterans.

Ability to provide supervision of counseling and psychotherapy to Postdoctoral Fellows, practicum students, or other students in training. Background working with disorders typically seen at university counseling centers.

Background working in a multidisciplinary setting.
