Occupational Summary
The Assistant Vice President for Research & Innovation (AVPRI) is a key driver in support of Duke's research initiatives. Reporting directly to the Vice President for Research & Innovation (VPRI), the AVPRI provides strategic leadership, oversight, and support for research and scholarly activities. This role involves close collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to advance the research mission.
Work Performed
Develop and implement strategic plans to enhance research and innovation across the university.
Drive efforts to address global challenges through innovative solutions.
Provide exceptional customer service to faculty, trainees, and staff engaged in research.
Contribute to the development of strategic plans, workplans, and budgets.
Foster collaboration with other university offices to maximize partnership effectiveness.
Collaborate with faculty, researchers, and university departments to understand and address unique support service needs.
Work closely with investigators to advocate for their interests and design policies that align with research goals.
Serve as a resource across the research enterprise, promoting awareness of services and process efficiency.
Manage special projects to streamline research support services.
Manage financial resources to support effective research support service delivery.
Participate in strategic planning and priority-setting within the research enterprise.
Advocate for research support services both internally and externally, representing the university in professional associations and conferences.
Lead meetings to improve processes and operations.
Implement tracking systems to measure progress and report performance metrics.
Supervise office operations, including staff oversight and database management.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Work requires a B.A. or B.S.; preferably an advanced degree (M.S., Ph.D., and/or M.D.)
Experience
Work requires 10 years of research experience and/or experience managing or leading research support or research administrative programs and initiatives. Deep understanding of research processes and resources at an R1 research university is strongly preferred.
