Occupational Summary

Reporting to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, the individual occupying this position has primary responsibility for planning, evaluation, assessment and overall strategy for assessment and accreditation compliance with the various Schools at Duke University. This individual manages the evaluation, assessment, and review process for assessment and accreditation compliance for all academic and administrative units from individual department to schools to administrative units across the university.

Work Performed

Serve as Duke's SACS-COC Liaison. Lead SACS-COC accreditation efforts for the campus, including Reaffirmation of Compliance, Interim Reports, Substantive Changes, and all other communication related to the Durham campus, NUS, DKU and other future sites.

Provide consultative support for new academic programs during their development re: assessment, evaluation, and SACS-COC approval.

Chair or lead campus-wide assessment and compliance committees/working groups, including School Assessment Representatives Group, Committee on Assessment of Educational and Administrative Services, QEP Ignite, Compliance Team, etc.

Stay abreast of trends and contemporary issues in federal [higher] education legislation and accreditation requirements; coordinate activities that augment Duke's institutional ability to respond to these evolving requirements.

Provide university-wide ongoing assessment support to and consultation for faculty, administrators, and senior leadership.

Develop strategies, manage data collection and set benchmarks for assessment activities and initiatives in schools across campus.

Conduct regular and differentiated faculty development workshops for course directors, DUSes, DGSes and faculty writ large on assessment strategies (for improving teaching and learning and for continuous programmatic improvement).

Consult with faculty on ways to improve their course evaluations.

Conduct unit audits, compliance reviews, organizational design and management consultation on accreditation compliance issues.

Provide guidance and institutional data/information in support of accreditation activities for professional programs as needed (LCME, AACSB, ABET, NCATE, etc).

Work with the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs on the administration of a variety of programs managed by the Vice Provost.

Maintain a research portfolio that includes University efforts with online classes, instructional technologies, and innovative pedagogies.

Conduct research related to assessment of teaching, learning and diversity (both at Duke and with colleagues outside Duke).

Write articles and make presentations on assessment and educational quality issues, initiatives, and activities in different forum (including regional and national conferences, peer-reviewed journals, popular media outlets, etc).

Serves as consultant and research aid for faculty and administrators engaging in discipline-specific and interdisciplinary education research.

Provide consultative services for grant recipients across campus who need evaluation assistance to comply with grant funding requirements.

Teach and advise students as a means to stay close to the educational environment.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires a background generally equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a related field. Advanced degree preferred.

Experience

Requires at least five years of related experience, including two in a higher education setting. Familiarity with accreditation/assessment software (Weave). Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team; self-starter; good organizational skills; excellent writing and presentation skills; ability to relate well to a variety of faculty and professionals in different fields. Familiarity with innovations in assessment of pedagogy both in person and on-line. Ability to work independently and carry responsibility for the university assessment and accreditation processes.
