Occupational Summary

The Assistant Vice Provost & Director of Financial Aid reports to the Provost through the Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education and the Executive Vice Provost for Finance and Administration and works collaboratively with the Dean of Admissions in supporting undergraduate admissions, academic and student life goals. The Director is a key member of the Provost's Working Group on Undergraduate Admissions and Financial Aid, which meets regularly under the leadership of the Provost to discuss policy and strategy issues. The Director has operational responsibility for undergraduate financial aid programs; in addition, the Director is responsible for the administration of federal Title IV funds throughout the university and for student loan programs campus- wide

Work Performed

Collaborate with other administrators under the leadership of the Provost in formulating and administering a broad range of policies and procedures that advance the university's educational goals based on a deep understanding of those goals, expert knowledge of the federal legislative and regulatory environment and of federal and institutional need analysis methodologies, and a keen understanding of Duke's place in a competitive environment.

Develop and administer an array of undergraduate financial aid strategies and programs (need-based, merit, hybrid) as well as policies and procedures that will best support our admissions objectives and promote the full participation of aided students in the educational and social community we are striving to create. Conceive and implement assessment strategies to ensure that our undergraduate financial aid investments are cost-effective in meeting our primary objectives.

Work seamlessly with, and often under the leadership of, the Dean of Undergraduate Admissions in the recruiting and admissions process. Work proactively with the Office of Undergraduate Scholars and Fellows and merit program faculty directors to recruit and support the best students possible for their programs.

Provide campus-wide leadership in developing collaborative programs and administering federal funds, working with senior administrators in the graduate and professional schools and with their financial aid staffs.

Work collaboratively with the Student Service Center and other offices serving enrolled students to provide the best possible service to students and parents.

Communicate clearly and honestly with parents and students, helping to create both a welcoming, inclusive community and a clear understanding of mutual obligations, policies and procedures.

Manage and develop staff to carry out the mission of the undergraduate financial aid office and student loan office in counseling families, awarding aid and managing funds, ensuring consistent training, a strong service orientation and effective teamwork within and outside the aid offices.

Ensure compliance with federal regulations, conformity to consortial agreements, and effective stewardship of institutional funds.

Help shape Duke's response to public issues and government relations and represent Duke in national policy discussions.

Participate actively in financial aid fundraising efforts and stewardship activities.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor's degree required.

Experience

The Director will be a financial aid professional with at least 10 years of experience, including at least five years at the associate director or director level.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Skills

The Director must be passionately committed to the interests of our students and their academic success and personal development. We expect the Director to be an outstanding leader who can contribute to policy and strategy discussions and a skillful manager who can work collaboratively with other administrators across the institution and oversee complex operations effectively. Familiarity with enterprise student administration systems is expected; experience with the PeopleSoft Student Administration system is preferred. The Director must be an effective and knowledgeable participant in public policy discussions regarding affordability and socio-economic diversity in higher education. Finally, the Director must be able to represent the financial aid program effectively with key constituencies such as students, parents, alumni, and donors.
