Occupational Summary

Assistant Vice President for Communication Services will have primary responsibility for all communications areas across Central Administration in coordination with communications across the university and health system.

Work Performed

Promotes and supports the consistent application of effective communication models and strategies along with streamlining multiple in house organs which are distributed from various areas of Central Administration.

Formulate responses to particular HR issues, initiatives, functions and/or activities for the Vice President as requested including, but not limited to, presentation to Board of Trustees on employee morale, white paper for Vice Chancellor and Executive Director report on workers' compensation to the President's Advisory Council on Resources and report on HR initiatives.

Achieve a positive image for HR including, but not limited to, setting standards for effective communications and working with departments to ensure standards are met, recommending an appropriate mix of media to achieve desired results, identifying cost effective and quality resources and training individuals on the process of communications to include content, distribution, timeliness and production; troubleshoot and resolve bottlenecks.

Develop and implement specific marketing campaigns or communications programs at the request of the departments, the Vice President or as deemed appropriate; develop and implement programs as part of a team or make presentation for department approval.

Develop and maintain effective working relationships with established sources of news for employees including, but not limited to, University News Service, communications and department newsletters, to solicit support for communication objectives and to achieve a positive public image in external press for Duke University as an employer.

Coordinate special projects for the Exec Vice President,Associate Vice President, HRDirectors, Chief of Staff for Administrative Services, Associate Vice Chancellor DUMC HR or other University officials as directed to include, but not limited to, employee survey and feedback process,speeches and presentations, emergency/contingency planning and communication strategy formulation.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelors Degree, communications-related Master's degree preferred.

Experience

Five years experience in designing, planning and implementing communication efforts in large, complex organizations. Experience and knowledge
