Occupational Summary

The Director of the Global Education Office for Undergraduates (GEO-U) and Assistant Vice-Provost for Global Education works with faculty and senior administration to oversee all aspects of international and domestic study away programs for undergraduates. Duke has a wide range of credit-bearing study away options; it also offers service and research opportunities around the globe. The GEO-U Director collaborates with other offices to create and support seamless, innovative, and immersive global opportunities for Duke Students.

Work Performed

Provide strategic leadership in managing more than 40 Duke-administered international and domestic programs and more than 170 programs offered by other providers; evaluates both long-standing and new global education programs.

Responsible for developing and providing on-going support for exchange programs with foreign institutions. Recruit Duke Faculty to direct and teach in study away programs. Serve as the academic liaison with the faculty and academic administration.

Working within Duke's larger global efforts, including but not limited to the new Duke Kunshan University (DKU), and rapidly evolving academic programs that incorporate study away in unconventional ways.

Serve on committees regarding global education and representing Duke at national and international meetings.

Supervise and coordinate work of departmental management employees and other departmental staff. Coordinate the compilation and preparation of operational and financial reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein. Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

An earned Ph.D. is required; field is open but relevance to global education should be clear.

Experience

At least five years' experience working with international education programs in higher education. Candidates should have a record of administrative and financial management at the director level, and the ability to interact effectively with students, parents, faculty, administrators, and staff and institutions outside the United States.

Skills

Skills in risk management, assessment, building new programs, and sustaining existing ones will be important. We seek highly collaborative individuals willing to think creatively beyond conventional models of "study abroad."
