Occupational Summary

Manage all aspects of the University's corporate external audit and GAAP financial reporting process to include the planning & coordination of the annual audit process for the University's corporate external financial statements and other required financial-oriented compliance reporting. Additionally, manage daily operations for central accounting functions including Plant Accounting team and the Accounting Systems Administration team overseeing the enterprise SAP financial system controls and data processing activities of the Accounting Services section engaged in maintaining and processing financial records.

Work Performed

Responsible for the leadership and development of a highly effective team who serve as collaborative partners supporting corporate accounting functions including the preparation of annual financial statements, maintenance of plant accounting records and oversight and maintenance of the general ledger including master data. Ensure human resources are aligned with critical tasks, provide timely and relevant employee feedback, develop targeted talent development plans, and develop succession plans for critical staff positions ensuring organizational continuity over time.

Provide oversight to the annual audit process and the compilation of data required to produce the University's corporate and other GAAP financial statements; ensure any audit issues of a material nature are resolved in a timely and satisfactory manner. Act as the University's primary point of contact with external auditors; plan and ensure effective communication among Duke staff and External Auditors. Direct the review and publication process for the University's Corporate and other GAAP financial statements; ensure timely distribution of the University's corporate financial statements to all internal and external users including the Board of Trustees and senior management.

Oversee fiscal month-end and fiscal year-end close processes, coordinating with various management centers to ensure and efficient, accurate and effective close.

Oversee the preparation and timely delivery of interim GAAP financial statements for senior management. Statements are produced for the University (on a stand alone basis) monthly and the SOM and SON semi- annually.

Plan, develop, validate and maintain the general ledger system including: establish access control procedures and authorize access to data of the corporate financial systems through automated access methods as appropriate; review existing elements of accounting code structures (fund, general ledger account, and reporting attributes) to clarify purpose and articulate philosophy of their usage; recommend modification to structure as appropriate; manage and control assignment of accounting code to ensure consistency with established purpose and philosophy; monitor ongoing utilization of elements of the accounting codes to ensure proper usage and to correct inconsistencies; and establish and coordinate revisions of accounting policies and procedures; prepare and maintain current accounting policies and procedures online for reference throughout Duke University.

Oversee Plant Accounting operations including tagging and inventory of equipment, capitalization of physical plant projects, maintenance of space assignments, maintenance of all SAP capital asset records.

Supervise and coordinate work of designated employees; manage various personnel functions including but not limited to hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules. Maintain and develop performance standards and reporting to monitor employee's adherence to the standards.

Serve as liaison between University departments and all corporate accounting functions concerning accounting automated systems, policies and procedures, and accounting code structure.

Act as primary University liaison with the finance function of the Duke University Health System for financial accounting and GAAP reporting; ensure coordinated efforts resulting in consistent and efficient financial accounting between both entities.

Works with all financial offices of the University, including the Office of the Provost, the Duke University Health System, Duke University Management Company, Schools of Medicine and Nursing, and the Office of University Counsel.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires a Bachelor's degree in accounting, business or related field combined with the successful completion of a certified public accountant status or an equivalent designation.

Certified Public Accountant status or an equivalent designation.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of ten years combined experience in a public accounting environment or higher education environment -- knowledge of GAAP, FASB, AICPA, and federal compliance requirements.
