Occupational Summary

Work closely with alumni and friends of Duke University to explore creative and tax-efficient ways to support Duke while accomplishing their other financial and personal goals. Serve as the Gift Planning team lead in expanding and executing cross-departmental programs and initiatives. Lead the ideation, research, and advocacy for new initiatives to promote planned gifts. Advise development officers within Duke Alumni Engagement & Development and in the university's schools, units and programs on matters concerning deferred and complex gifts by prospects and donors.

Work Performed

Develop and maintain a portfolio of gift planning prospects and donors, serving as a philanthropic planning advisor to help them explore current and deferred gifts to benefit the university. Work with attorneys, accountants and financial advisors to help them assist their clients in considering complex charitable giving strategies. Draft and review related documents, illustrations, proposals, endowment agreements and other materials as needed by prospects, donors and their professional advisors with a focus on clarity and attention to detail.

Co-lead the Comprehensive Reunion Program as the Gift Planning representative on Comprehensive Reunion Working Group. Lead Gift Planning Officers in identifying and recruiting volunteers to advocate for planned gifts in publications and as class co-chairs. Coordinate Gift Planning seminars with the Reunions Team and lead Gift Planning Officers in developing and delivering those seminars.

Serve as the Gift Planning liaison to the Advancement Team, collaborating with the Director of Major & Leadership Gifts on orientation of new Advancement Team members with regard to Gift Planning prospect identification and referrals, reviewing procedures and expectations regarding those referrals, and serving as the primary contact for questions and additional training regarding Gift Planning techniques.

Partner with the Duke Women's Impact Network to promote planned gift strategies to network membership (particularly in coordination with campaign initiatives) and explore further collaborative efforts with the Young Alumni Development Council.

Serve as the Gift Planning Team liaison to the Blueprints Blog editorial team, partnering with the Marketing, Communications and Stewardship Team to develop overall strategy and implement an editorial calendar for the blog, produce content, and analyze metrics/traffic/results.

Lead ideation, research, and advocacy for new initiatives that will promote planned gifts to donors and prospects, including a deferred gift challenge initiative, a program seeking designation as residual beneficiary of commercial donor advised funds, and initiatives coordinated with university-wide comprehensive campaigns; coordinate strategy to obtain buy-in from colleagues; develop parameters; and co- develop communication resources with the Marketing, Communications and Stewardship team.

Collaborate with colleagues including peers in Duke's individual schools, colleges and programs. Develop an understanding of their programs, funding priorities and the broad scope of their activities and provide excellent customer service. Pro-actively assist these colleagues in identifying gift planning prospects and promoting planned gift strategies. Provide development assistance including: gift planning expertise, endowment and gift agreement advice, and educational presentations for staff members, boards and prospects. Promote innovation in their approach to gift planning fundraising.

Assist with planning and conducting stewardship events and producing gift planning publications. Help insure compliance with applicable regulations and university policies. Serve as a team-oriented leader within the Gift Planning Office, providing ideas and support and pro- actively seeking ways to accomplish the overall goals of the Office.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor's degree required. Law, business, finance or other advanced degree preferred.

Experience

A minimum of seven years in legal, accounting, financial, fund raising or related field required.
