Occupational Summary

Plan, direct, and coordinate Office of Global Affairs (OGA) strategic efforts to promote internationalization of the Duke campus and advance the university's global footprint. Oversee the day to day operations of the OGA. Supervise all administrative staff in the office.

Work Performed

Support the Executive Vice Provost in working closely with faculty leaders, senior officers of the university and academic deans to advance Duke's global strategy and coordinate and communicate that strategy. Serve as the central resource for program information on global programs and activities across the University.

Inventory all relationships, including maintaining documentation thereof.

Facilitate discussions across schools, UICs, and other groups across campus with respect to new relationships and any changes in relationships.

Coordinate and engage with relevant university groups on these relationships (e.g., legal, HR, tax, governance, academic programs, etc.).

Assist and maintain documentation on these relationships.

Curate presentation and other materials related to Duke global activities.

Deliver presentations as appropriate relevant to broader Duke global footprint.

Research best practices in developing and implementing global programs across academia and recommend new programs and initiatives for Duke University.

Oversee day-today operations as well as strategy-setting of OGA. Provide strategic support for major initiatives undertaken by OGA, including but not limited to the Africa Initiative, Brazil Initiative and India Initiative.

Oversee the international and area study centers by providing managerial oversight and assisting its directors with HR issues, budgets and grants.

Conceptualize, supervise, and implement the process and establishment of Duke's global offices, consulting with senior leadership in central finance, legal, HR, etc.

Directly supervise the executive director of the Bangalore office and any centers to follow.

Own the OGA website and Interactive Map website, including responsibility for content maintenance and development of new strategies for web presence as global initiatives develop and expand.

Help to develop and execute communication strategies for disseminating information on global programs, in collaboration with the Director of Global Communications. Provide written documentation (e.g., websites, memorandums, news briefings, regional fact sheets and stories) as required.

Serve as the Fulbright representative on campus and recruit incoming and outgoing scholars to the Fulbright program.

Represent the University to students, parents, alumni, other institutions and friends of Duke as appropriate in both informal and formal settings to explain and promote Duke's global profile.

Travel internationally as needed to support Duke's global work and to assist with fundraising efforts.

Serve as a focal point for organizing and scheduling visits to the University for delegations from universities, and other entities as relevant, outside the United States. Respond to inquiries related to such visits.

Chair and serve on institutional committees and attend meetings representing the global offices.

When hosted by OGA, develop priorities, agendas, and appropriate follow- up messaging.

Lead and convene the Global Priority's Committee, a faculty-led committee that advises the Provost and President of Duke on global issues.

Oversee budgetary requests, prepare OGAs budget memos, and work with the Provost's Office finance staff to plan OGAs budget.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Master's degree required, doctoral degree preferred, in a globally related field.

Experience

A minimum of 7 years of explicit global program experience required.

Experience directly managing one or more global programs in an academic setting preferred.

Skills

Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills as demonstrated through prior experience.

Demonstrated ability to independently manage and supervise an office team with a common mission

Able to work effectively with groups and individuals at all levels of management.

Preferred skills:

Experience directly managing one or more global program in an academic setting

Demonstrated negotiation, consultative, and facilitation skills

Demonstrated ability to function independently and at a high level in a fast-paced environment

High fluency in one or more foreign languages
