Occupational Summary

The Office of Campus Research Development (OCRD), part of the Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR), provides an array of research development services to help lead a campus-wide effort to raise the quality of submitted applications for funding opportunities from external sponsors. OCRD works closely with the Office of Research Support (ORS), research development liaisons across the Campus schools, and the Office of Foundation Relations (for foundation grants) in these research development endeavors.

The Senior Research Development Associate (Sr. RDA) will work to support proposal development across the Campus units, with a particular focus on projects from Duke's Trinity College of Arts & Sciences and the Pratt School of Engineering. The Sr. RDA should be able to facilitate and lead development of basic to complex proposals with minimal direct oversight. Facilitation will encompass comprehensive guidance to faculty and other personnel from early to final stages of proposal development.

Work Performed

Ensure appropriate bottom line targets are developed and met relative to quality of care through the hospital's quality assurance program; assure development and implementation of outcomes management and associated performance targets, including, but not limited to patient satisfaction surveys, physician relations, staff satisfaction and continuing education; monitor variances; recommend and implement corrective action via a balanced scorecard approach.

Monitor level of resources utilized in service delivery and determines appropriateness of resource consumption in the service; enhance effectiveness and efficiency of as well as satisfaction with patient care delivery; develop recommendations for appropriate care, redesigning as necessary, and coordinate implementation.

Compile and prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations and/or conclusions related to productivity, resources and patient care.

Direct various personnel functions including, but not limited to hiring, merit recommendations, promotions, transfers, terminations, etc. Assist the Assistant/Associate Operating Officer in such duties as may be assigned or delegated including staffing analyses, and recommendations regarding policies and procedures for clinical operational areas. Ensure departmental CQI program is based on the high volume/high risk/problem prone factors of the specific department/clinical area.

Maintain liaison with affiliated/referring hospitals and/or agencies, as appropriate.

Coordinate activities with other Directors, CSU leaders and/or Departments throughout the Hospital and Health System to ensure efficient, seamless services. Represent the clinical operational areas and/or Assistant/Associate Operating Officer in meetings, conferences and other affairs of an administrative nature.

Ensure criteria for employment for all staff are identified, communicated and maintained beginning at entry into system, annually as required.

Ensure Departmental, Hospital and Health System changes are communicated to staff.

Serve as a professional role model and mentor to staff by responding positively to change while supporting colleagues through the change process. Serve as a change agent to facilitate communication and transition that supports the mission of the organization.

Ensure a unit-based work force that is diverse and cognizant of the value diversity brings to the workplace.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor's degree in STEM, social science, biomedical, or related field. A doctoral degree is highly desirable with demonstration of an understanding and familiarity with a broad range of science or technical subject matter.

Experience

Minimum of five years of experience working with relevant extramural grants and contracts in an academic setting, with such experience to include at least 2 years of significant editing and advising responsibilities regarding scientific and administrative components.

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
