Occupational Summary

Manage and coordinate overall operations for special maintenance support and construction and renovation projects assigned to Duke Medical Center Engineering and Operations. Manage and coordinate construction trades shop personnel as well as oversight of contracted labor projects needed to support Duke Hospital, Duke Clinics and medical research facilities and systems.

Work Performed

Manage and coordinate the work associated with the construction and renovation of Medical Center buildings and facilities; manage special maintenance projects to support upkeep of current facilities and infrastructure; coordinate efforts for new construction, upgrades and renovation projects assigned to Engineering and Operations; monitor the estimating, financing, completion and inspection of projects.

Maintain liaison with consulting engineers and architects regarding design and construction of projects and systems; review requests and evaluate feasibility and cost of project; make recommendations and advise architects and engineers concerning tie-ins and existing systems.

Consult and collaborate with other departments, administration, contractors, and vendors in determining details and special needs in construction projects.

Coordinate resolution for special renovation and construction problems and assist user in determining priorities for changes as needed.

Manage the review of plans, specifications and equipment needs and the inspection of projects and facilities to ensure compliance with The Joint Commission, NFPA, OSHA, and other state and federal codes and regulations as applies to construction and renovation standards in medical and research facilities.

Monitor and review project financial statements and prepare a variety of operational reports and analysis setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions; make appropriate business recommendations to ensure the division remains competitive and provides a cost effective service.

Carry out management/supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable procedures. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; performance management; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Make recommendations regarding annual operating and capital budgets to direct report.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

BA/BS degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience related to the position duties

Experience

Position requires a minimum of 6 years of experience in construction and renovation operations in a healthcare setting of which 3 years must be in a management role

Skills

Must have knowledge of The Joint Commission, CMS, DFS, State and Local Codes, and NFPA standards related to construction standards within hospital, clinic and research facilities; good communication and leadership skills required. Supervisory skills required
