Occupational Summary

This role reflects Duke's commitment to and strategic investment in civic engagement. The position reports to the Vice President for Durham and Community Affairs and is an instrumental member of the senior leadership team, dedicated to forging purposeful partnerships with Duke constituents and neighbors in the region.

The role involves collaboration with key Duke and community-based partners to advance collective interests. The position will establish a vision and implement strategic objectives to support the institution's civic engagement endeavors. The role will provide strategic direction for community partnerships and serve as a champion for community collaboration.

Work Performed

Coordinate with university constituents in support of engaged scholarship, community-based understandings, and inclusive frameworks to inform community partnerships and civic engagement activities in Durham and beyond.

Develop and sustain efforts to build breakthrough and best practices across civic engagement programs including professional development, training, and other learning opportunities to support engaged scholarship and service, including certification programs related to civic engagement and social impact.

Build partnerships with offices across Duke to identify opportunities for collaborative work including cultivating opportunities for partnership among units working on civic engagement efforts and with community partners.

Lead with data-informed practices including annual assessment measures and reports, pursuing external and internal funding opportunities to advance civic engagement at Duke, analyzing available data to continually improve and innovate programs and communications strategies, and advancing the field of civic engagement through discourse, scholarship, literature, and practice.

Implement and share the Civic Action Plan priorities and updates on progress with the campus; Collaborate with other units to develop and facilitate programming or resources aligning with the Civic Action Plan priorities of community partnerships, coordination, ethics of service, faculty and staff support and equity and justice.

Advise and support student organizations in civic engagement practices.

Coordinate civic engagement activities and events with partners across Duke.

Coordinate, plan, and sustain advisory councils for civic engagement.

Determine fiscal requirements of the civic engagement programs; prepare budgetary recommendations; prepare grant proposals and meet with potential donors as necessary.

Prepare reports and presentations for various constituents outlining the impact of university-community partnerships.

Recommend organizational structures, personnel, and resources to ensure a collaborative environment at all levels; Direct various personnel functions, including, but not limited to, hiring, merit recommendations, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.

Provide strategic, tactical, and operational advice to the vice president on all aspects of civic engagement; represent and advise the vice president as appropriate.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Master's degree required; doctorate preferred.

Experience

Minimum of six years of full-time work experience related to higher education and/or civic engagement, volunteer or international development programs, or other types of programs relevant to the duties of this position.

Demonstrated experience in project planning, budget management, proposal development, and writing.
