Occupational Summary

This position supervises Academic Consultants and is responsible for enhancing undergraduate education at Duke by developing innovative programming and providing specialized academic support to students in self-regulated learning and metacognition. The Senior Academic Consultant provides leadership in the creation of evidence-based, holistic approaches that support students' academic and emotional well- being and build resilience. In collaboration with campus partners, the Senior Academic Consultant designs and implements enriching services that cultivate academic excellence, encourage emotional health, and foster life-long learning.

Work Performed

The Senior Academic Consultant directs the work of Academic Consultants.

-Plans and facilitates staff meetings.

-Meets individually with Academic Consultants for management of programs and services and professional development discussions.

-Completes annual performance reviews.

-Coordinates training and professional development.

-In conjunction with the Director, administer the Academic Consultants' budgets.

-Work with the Academic Consultants to regularly review the budget and collect information as needed from various areas to update the budget as services grow and change over time.

The Senior Academic Consultant meets individually with students to provide customized support in self-regulation, academic skills, resilience, and personal well-being.

-Assess students' needs and make recommendations/referrals to campus partners or other campus offices or services as appropriate.

-Coach students to develop an academic success plan, and identify specific strategies towards developing competencies to enhance their learning and develop themselves holistically.

-Through academic coaching and time-management consulting, work with students to develop strong self-management skills.

-Support students in making behavioral changes that nurture long-term positive emotional well-being.

-Assist students with general advising including academic pathway options, course selection, connection to others in the advising network, and integration of curricular, co-curricular, and experiential opportunities.

The Senior Academic Consultant uses data to inform the development, implementation, and evaluation of student excellence programs.

-Work closely with program team to create and implement novel academic programs and enhance existing programs.

-Develop, monitor, and analyze all facets of assigned budget and marketing for program activities.

-Identify and/or develop electronic, media, and instructional technology resources to supplement students' learning. Train students and staff on effective use of these new resources.

-In collaboration with the Research Scientist, faculty liaison, program team, and ARC Director, establish program outcomes and conduct program assessment and evaluation to measure these outcomes and implement iterative program enhancements.

The Senior Academic Consultant will

-Provide training for college advisors.

-Support other programmatic living-learning activities as necessary.

-Be highly trained in academic support, academic advising, and motivational interviewing in order to integrate the academic, resilience, and personal well-being tools students need to make behavioral changes for success.

-Recruit, hire, train and supervise peer educators in assigned programs.

-Represent the Program throughout University and professional organizations, associations, and committees. -Serve on ARC committees to advance the work of the center.

-Participate in broader ARC outreach and marketing efforts.

-Assist with center assessment and evaluation.

-Participate in ARC staff meetings and other ARC related meetings as needed.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Master's degree is required. A Ph.D. is strongly preferred.

Experience

At least 3 years of experience providing academic support, advising, teaching or related engagement with students in a higher education setting.
