Occupational Summary
As a member of the President's senior leadership, the Vice President for Government Relations serves as the chief strategist, advancing and directing government relations programs in support of the mission of Duke University.
Work Performed
Oversee University government relations, advising the president, senior leadership, and board of trustees on matters related to the potential impact of proposed state, federal, and international legislative and regulatory changes on Duke's operations.
Lead and supervise a professional government relations staff that interacts with local, state, federal and international legislative bodies, government agencies, and executive branches concerning Duke University's interests, and the functional impact of any decisions or proposals, and suggesting modifications as appropriate.
Establish and maintain contacts with outside organizations and other educational institutions to aid and foster Government Relations activities.
Develop and implement strategic plans for operational changes necessitated by legislative mandates; suggest alternative policies and procedures to enable the University to accomplish its objectives.
Collaborate with the Chancellor of Health Affairs to coordinate Duke Medicine's government relations with those of the university and ensure that all are in support of the broader goals of the institution.
Coordinate with and support Vice President of Durham and Community Affairs and Office of State Relations on local and statewide political engagement and strategy.
Supervise and oversee Duke in DC, Duke's academic and research center in Washington, DC.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred.
Experience
Minimum of 15+ years related experience. Extensive experience in public relations/government relations disciplines in complex organizations is expected, including an appreciation for academic culture and mission.
