Occupational Summary

Direct a variety of activities involved in the oversight and development of the worship life and spiritual life of students, faculty, and staff.

Work Performed

Plan and coordinate all worship activities related to the worship life of Duke Divinity School including, but not limited to, recruiting preachers and worship leaders, developing orders of worship, and organizing chapel resources.

Perform worship activities including, but not limited to, services of Morning Prayer, York Chapel worship, Opening and Closing Convocations, Baccalaureate, retreats, lecture series, and preaching series.

Provide oversight of all activities related to the 1st year class' Spiritual Formation Groups program such as: recruiting, training and supervising small group leaders; developing and evaluating programs; assigning students to groups; scheduling visiting lecturers/workshop leaders; serving as a small group leader.

Provide planning and oversight for 2nd and 3rd year students' Spiritual Formation Groups.

Serve as Chaplain for the Course of Study School; in coordination with the Director, plan and provide oversight for the worship life of the program's students and staff.

Provide pastoral counseling services and/or crisis intervention for students such as consulting with members of the Divinity School and/or referring other professional counseling sources; provide emergency care visitations, initiate and maintain contact when needed by students, faculty and staff to assist with personal needs and issues.

Supervise the Office of the Chaplain's support staff; interview, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate student Worship Interns; recruit and train students to serve as worship leaders for special services in the Duke Chapel; Provide oversight for the work of the student-led Community Care Ministry Team.

Assist the Associate Dean for Student Services with the organization, development, implementation, and oversight of the Ubuntu racial reconciliation groups for students and faculty.

Determine the fiscal requirements and prepare and manage budgetary recommendations for the Office of the Chaplain. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires analytical, communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a Master's in Divinity.

Experience

Work requires ordination as a United Methodist elder and at least three years of parish ministry.
