Occupational Summary

The Associate Vice President in Office of Duraham & Community Affairs (DCA) works directly with the VP, organizational leadership, units within DCA, campus, and community members on matters related to business operations, financial planning and analysis, budgeting, applied research, grants management, and advancement, and will be expected to develop and provide broad strategies for divisional and unit leadership. Under the direction of the Vice President, provides oversight for the organization's overall financial management, budgeting, pre-and post- award grants management, MOU reviews and contract negotiations, and general administration, compliance, and risk management.

Work Performed

Offers thoughtful insights to discussions and planning aligned with University and Health System strategic priorities and works across the university as the key DCA senior leadership liaison to human resources, university counsel, informational technology, institutional research, risk management, and other central offices

Recommends best practices related to university-community partnerships and anchor agreements.

Leads asset mapping and data-warehousing for university-community projects and partnerships.

Serves as a resource across the DCA organization to support cohesiveness, information-sharing, and development of protocols for partnership activities.

Oversees and reviews the organization's personnel, space and facilities planning, and university policy implementations for DCA.

Guides development of centralized business practices, integrating standardized processes, including onboarding, staff training, grants management, sponsored programs management, record-keeping, and archiving.

Leads continuous process improvements to identify opportunities for efficiency improvements in various operational processes, including workflows and implementing best practices.

Guides research design, data analysis, and interpretation of findings related to Duke's interest in the region, particularly emphasizing the priority areas.

Spearheads collaboration with campus and community partners on matters related to the preparation of elective classifications for community engagement, such as planning, data collection, self-study, and executive summary report, are completed timely and sufficiently.

Leads an effective and wide-ranging program of quantitative and qualitative research that supports decision- making with community partners and includes activities such as outcomes and follow-up research, needs assessment, feasibility studies, cost-benefit analysis, policy analysis, survey research, focus groups, etc.

Oversees a program evaluation structure to support the stewardship of resources and accomplishment of key performance indicators for DCA. Designs metrics, jointly with the community and colleagues, based on outcomes and measures of success related to priority focus areas.

Establishes and communicates all fundraising priorities and activities for the Office of Durham and Community Affairs, providing reports, presentations, briefings and reliable information regarding Duke-Durham partnerships.

Spearheads and implements a comprehensive development plan for fundraising for the organization that includes gifts from individuals, foundations, corporate sources, and employee giving; Partners with Duke Alumni Engagement and Development to assist in initiating, supporting, and strengthening relationships that provide significant value to fund DCA priorities with partners, donors and friends; Leads a systematic and integrated donor relations and stewardship program encompassing donor recognition events, endowment and naming celebrations.

Facilitates, develops, and implements resources to support non-profit capacity-building.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Doctorate degree required; graduate degree in education, public sector administration, public policy, or other related field strongly preferred.

Experience

Work requires ten years of experience managing grants and philanthropic resources; experience evaluating outcomes-based programs and associated metrics.
