Occupational Summary

The Transit Planner is responsible for developing the short and long- range plans for implementation of new or modified routes, discontinuance of unproductive service, amenity improvements, and assessment of capital needs of Duke University Parking & Transportation.

Work Performed

Lead development and coordination of Duke's Long-Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) including research and analysis of component areas such as roads, public transportation, and alternative modes of transportation.

Develop population projections; generate maps and analyze spatial data using transit planning software; forecast travel patterns and financial implications for Duke's LRTP and analyze environmental and societal impacts.

Routinely analyze transit system as well as a variety of performance data and policies; identify problems, evaluate potential alternatives and solutions, and make recommendations; assemble related statistical data and prepare reports summarizing findings or analysis; and participate in implementation of adopted solutions and projects.

Research and identify potential funding sources for short-range transit plan improvements. Administer various survey instruments (mystery riders, customer surveys and questionnaires, etc.) to analyze and measure quality of transit services and programs.

Assist with the management of consultant studies, including the preparation of requests for proposals, selection of consultants, and supervision of consultant work.

Respond to customer inquiries by explaining policies and/or investigating issues; prepare presentation materials and present reports or proposals to interdepartmental committees, rider population, and community groups to educate and provide updates on transportation issues.

Support the university's sustainability goal by working in partnership with the Director of Sustainability to ensure consistency with transportation demand management efforts and related alternative transportation options, and to develop joint programming opportunities. Work to identify federal, state, and local transportation grant opportunities, and participate in the grant writing process as well as the management of any funding received.

Represent the university, as directed, on high-level internal and external working groups and work to develop positive relationships within those cohorts. Maintain close relationships with city parking and transit providers to ensure coordination of efforts and identify opportunities for shared services. Participate in relevant meetings, conferences, workshops, training sessions, professional associations and reviews relevant publications to remain current on transportation planning principles, practices, and new developments in field.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires a bachelor's degree in transportation planning or a related field from an accredited four-year college. Master's degree in urban planning, regional planning, transportation planning, or civil engineering preferred.

Experience

Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience equal in scope to the requirements and duties of the position
