Occupational Summary

The Physician Assistant Fellow is involved in a 12-month intensive training program administered by clinical science departments at Duke University Medical Center. Physician Assistant Fellows are credentialed as full members of the medical team and are involved in all aspects of preventative, diagnostic, and therapeutic patient care. The Fellow will attend lectures, seminars, and laboratories and participate in clinical, hands-on patient care with appropriate oversight by the supervising physician.

Work Performed

Attend lectures, seminars, and laboratories that have been designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the pathophysiology of various disease processes. Instruction will cover both general and subspecialty topics. Emphasis will be placed on didactic and clinical training in a medical specialty which will allow the fellow to gain more autonomy as they master evaluation skills, knowledge of disease processes, and become competent in all procedures necessary to practice in a specified medical practice. In addition to classroom/laboratory instruction, the clinical curriculum will include attending weekly rounds, Grand Rounds, D&C Conference and other conferences organized by the designated department. Prepare for clinical rotations by rounding with the healthcare team and becoming familiar with the routine of the clinical practice.

Clinical curriculum duties will include history and physical examinations, writing patient orders and progress notes in the hospital record, responding to and evaluating patient problems, making rounds, ordering diagnostic studies, and could also include assisting in the Operating Room, and performing invasive procedures with appropriate competence checks and oversight by the supervising physician and/or designated back-up physicians. Take "night call" on a rotating basis. The PA Fellow will be the first call house officer and, under the supervision of the senior resident, will be primarily responsible for the care of all patients on the service.
