Occupational Summary

The Assistant Vice President of Development, DCI and Duke Children's has two key responsibilities: to secure robust philanthropic support in order to advance the missions of two of Duke Health's most notable research, education and health care programs and to contribute to the practical and strategic advancement of Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs and its component programs.

The Duke Cancer Institute, one of the eight original National Cancer Institute designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States, and Duke Children's, nationally ranked for grant support by the NIH, are unique at Duke Health in terms of their community impact, their ability to attract grateful patient support, and the depth and scope of their fundraising programs.

As a member of the Vice President's Cabinet, the Assistant Vice President will contribute, through operating and strategic planning, to Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs fundraising initiatives, campaigns and other programs. Members of the Vice President's cabinet consider and contribute to other programmatic efforts that enhance DHDAA's success, including new programs and resource development. The Assistant Vice President will also serve on the Senior Leadership Team.

Work Performed

As a senior member of the Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs team, the Assistant Vice President of Development, DCI and Duke Children's will contribute to the advancement of Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs (DHDAA's) new strategic plan. The Assistant Vice President of Development, DCI and Duke Children's will be responsible for developing and pursuing specialized strategic plans to ensure the growth of both programs by nurturing their distinctions, promoting best practices in fund raising at all levels, seeking opportunities for collaboration and optimizing resources. The Assistant Vice President of Development, DCI and Duke Children's will also set the stage for each program to secure new levels of giving.

The Assistant Vice President of Development, DCI and Duke Children's provides direction and is responsible for planning, managing and executing fund-raising activities in support of Duke Cancer Center's (DCI) and Duke Children's Development including developing new strength in leadership and principal gifts, expanding the major gifts program, effective development communications, faculty engagement, developing and managing budgets, significant growth in annual fund programs and creative social media and community engagement programs as well as volunteer motivation and management.

The Assistant Vice President of DCI and Duke Children's is responsible for volunteer programs and for enhancing faculty engagement in fund raising, managing and mentoring strong and growing professional teams, pursuing an individual prospect portfolio, and cultivating positive relationships among the patient families, community supporters, Duke alumni, former residents, and current and former faculty in support of Duke Children's and DCI's academic mission which includes patient care, teaching, research and advocacy. The Assistant Vice President of Development, DCI and Duke Children's reports to the Vice President of Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs and works with the Chair of the Department of Pediatrics and the Executive Director of DCI to determine priorities to meet endowment, capital and operating needs that will position both programs as pre-eminent health care institutions of their kind in the United States.

Oversee and manage all development activities of Duke Children's and DCI Development

Strategic Planning for Duke Children's and DCI Development

In consultation with the Vice President of DHDAA and the Chair of Pediatrics and the Executive Director of DCI, prioritize the funding opportunities of Children's and DCI's initiatives; develop immediate, short term and long range plans for support required to implement programs including faculty recruitment, basic and clinical research, endowed and spendable faculty support, capital, and unrestricted funds.

Design, implement and oversee fundraising strategic plans as well as annual operating plans for Duke Children's and DCI that orient the development programs toward maximizing principal, leadership & major gifts and enhancing traditional and new programs to encourage annual, unrestricted gifts. Oversee organizational design and development to achieve program objectives.

Design and implement ongoing programs that identify, cultivate, and result in solicitation of major gifts.

Collaborate strategically with Duke Health and Duke University colleagues to identify and engage prospects with an interest in Pediatrics and Cancer from the broader Duke community.

Serve as a member of the Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs senior management team; actively participate in long-range planning, budgeting, overall fundraising planning and implementation, work culture activities, and DHDAA operational policies and procedures.

Fundraising/Volunteer Management

Manage a portfolio of significant prospects and donors to Duke Children's and DCI. Work collaboratively with senior colleagues to devise comprehensive, logical strategies for these prospects.

Manage the recruitment of volunteer leaders and staff to Duke Children's National Board of Advisors and DCI Board of Advisors in support of leadership, principal and major gift efforts.

In collaboration with DHDAA leaders, design and implement a faculty engagement program to encourage fundraising from grateful patients and other potential prospects.

Provide development support for the Chair of Duke Children's and the DCI Executive Director and other senior academic leaders in securing philanthropic support for research, education, advocacy, and patient care.

Provide ongoing stewardship of donors through special events, receptions, luncheons, dinners, letters, calls and visits.

Supervise professional and support staff, including directing personnel actions such as hiring, performance appraisals, promotions and transfers, and vacation schedules, among others.

In consultation with Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs business manager and business managers in Duke Children's and DCI, determine fiscal and personnel requirements for Duke Children's Development and DCI Development; prepare budgetary recommendations.

Promote best practices in prospect management, community engagement, annual fund programs, and volunteer management.

Develop comprehensive development communications plans, maintaining strong relationships with DHDAA communications, School of Medicine communications & DUHS marketing and communications.

Prepare reports and analyses of the progress, trends and direction of Duke Children's and DCI initiatives with appropriate recommendations & conclusions.

Serve on the Vice President's Cabinet. Cabinet members report directly to the Vice President and share responsibility for DHDAA's success. Members contribute, through operating and strategic planning, to Duke Health and Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs fundraising initiatives, campaigns and other programs. Members of the Vice President's cabinet consider and contribute to other programmatic efforts that enhance DHDAA's success, including new programs and resource development. Cabinet members prioritize program development, consider budget and implementation issues; and propose and shape office policies and culture.

Serve on the Senior Leadership Team. Senior Leadership Team members implement operating and strategic plans and key initiatives, as well as improve key programs. Leadership Team members insure consistent execution of best practices, and implement change management as needed. Leadership Team members identify opportunities and problems, and recommend solutions to the Cabinet and Vice President.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program. Masters preferred.

Experience

Minimum of 10 years of fundraising and management experience in development, including alumni relations, major and principal gift work. Experience in academic medical centers a crucial advantage.
