Occupational Summary

The Center for Nursing Discovery (CND) Director will oversee the daily operations of the CND including scheduling of rooms, assigning personnel, and evaluation of services to the various customers of the CND (i.e. faculty, staff and students). Manage the School of Nursing's student clinical skills, patient simulation and physical assessment labs, and CND budget and resources.

Work Performed

Establish inventory levels for standard items to facilitate teaching- learning. Oversee orientation of all CND users including faculty, staff and students. Schedule and conduct tours of the CND for appropriate visitors. Coordinate CND activities with the Development and Alumni Affairs Office.

Collaborate with building manager to optimize utilization of CND and schedule cleaning, maintenance and structural refinements as needed. Collaborate with information technology department to optimize utilization of technology in CND. Partner with key stakeholders (program directors, specialty directors, administration) to determine technology needs and resources to optimize innovative teaching-learning strategies.

Conduct period analysis of existing resources and evaluate trends to determine future space, equipment, and human resource needs. Coordinate installation of new equipment/software/technology to be fully compliant with DUSON, Health System and University requirements. Includes processes for negotiating contracts, securing bids, and preparing RFPs for specific projects. Develop and evaluate policies and procedures to (1) monitor compliance to ensure student/faculty safety in the labs; (2) establish scheduling procedures to promote equal access to CND resources; and (3) allocation of resources including staff, supplies and durable equipment.

Collaborate with administration, development and faculty to create proposals related to innovative teaching-learning and simulation. Oversee the management of inventory, procurement, stocking and use of lab supplies, linen and equipment.

Consult with and assist nursing faculty and other University faculty/staff as appropriate to design simulation and interprofessional education activities. Collaborate with academic programs to optimize use of CND resources to achieve course/clinical objectives. Synthesize literature and formulate recommendations to program directors/faculty regarding innovative technology applications in teaching-learning.

Propose best practices regarding use of simulation and its integration into curricular, clinicals and/or classroom. Partner with key stakeholders to design, implement and evaluate effectiveness of innovative teaching-learning strategies. Partner with key stakeholders to propose research questions/design studies to evaluate transference of student learning from the simulation lab to the clinical setting.

Supervise CND staff to ensure delivery of services as outlined by faculty requests including scheduling, approving time off, reviewing workloads, and conducting performance appraisals. Analyze the School of Nursing strategic plan and formulate recommendations for positive impact on CND. Conduct operational analysis, benchmarking and workflow re- engineering to proactively create strategies to ensure efficient, cost- effective utilization of CND resources. Develop and guide efforts to strengthen relationships and partnerships throughout the University and the community of interest. Serve on School, University, Health System and/or professional organizations/committees as assigned. Serve as a liaison in coordinating, implementing and evaluating interprofessional initiatives. Collaborate with development, alumni affairs, and marketing/public relations to promote CND and DUSON in the press, media or at national meetings.

Prepare, monitor, and systematically evaluate the CND budget. Collaborate with business office to ensure timely payment to vendors, negotiate contracts, and rectify variances in the budget. Optimize allocation of CND resources to support teaching-learning innovations including equipment purchases and use of standardized patients. Collaborate with key stakeholders annually to determine future needs in CND including equipment and supplies. Utilize this information in the development of the annual budget proposal. Collaborate with grant project directors to facilitate meeting specific project goals/aims as necessary. Develop educational work-shops to outside entities.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

A Masters degree in nursing is required. Licensure as a registered nurse in the state of NC is required. Advanced education in biological, physical, or computer science or related field preferred. Further, the individual must meet the NC BON 318 regulatory requirements within six months of hire.

Experience

Work performed requires at least two years of patient care experience. Previous teaching experience and experience with learning/teaching outcomes evaluation preferred. Experience in clinical simulation, use of technology in teaching-learning, operating simulation mannequins and related simulation equipment is highly preferred.

Skills

The successful candidate will possess excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to foster positive working relationships. A high degree of organization and the ability to follow- through on assignments and tasks is necessary. Other preferred skills include: human physiology knowledge; medical terminology training; Emergency Medical Technician [EMT] certification;completedBasic Life Support [BLS] or Advanced Cardiac Life Support [ACLS] training.
