Occupational Summary

The Director is responsible for overseeing the development and execution of adult education programs in support of the university's offerings in lifelong learning and professional development. The spectrum of programs ranges from online asynchronous courses to in-person conferences on campus and in regions across the country. Building on the expertise of faculty and subject-matter experts across the university community and working with the state-of-the-art academic and technological resources of the university, the work overseen by the senior director supports the non-credit pursuits of a diverse constituency including local and remote learners, as well as the more than 190,000 Duke alumni around the world. This position reports to the AVP of Lifelong Learning/Learning Innovation supporting both the Offices of the Vice Provost of Learning Innovation and Digital Education and Alumni Engagement and Development, and supervises four program directors.

Work Performed

Program Development and Direction

Lead the development of online and in-person adult educational programs from idea through evaluation.

Recruit faculty and subject-matter experts to support the development and presentation of content in academic and professional development programs.

Support the forward progress of the university's strategic goals and priorities through the selection of programs, speakers, and topics.

Serve as an advisor to AED teams in the development of regional education programs, particularly those that feature faculty and alumni voices.

Oversee the development of the Forever Learning Institute, the Oxford Experience, and other alumni education programs.

Working with the leaders of the educational programs, identify and develop opportunities for cross-collaboration and broader audience opportunities.

Identify and encourage opportunities for partnership and collaboration with university schools, departments and initiatives.

Ensure programs are employing best-practices and share observations with university partners and collaborators to maintain and improve content quality and user experiences.

Evaluation, Research, and Refinement

Investigate industry trends and professional development needs to identify areas of potential program growth to support the needs of the constituency.

Support the development of new programs using market research and analysis, as well as other available data sets provided by Duke departments.

Oversee the consistent deployment of measurement tools and resources to evaluate programs for student success and satisfaction, and identify opportunities for program refinement or reduction.

Team Leadership and Management

Lead the day-to-day work of the Alumni Education, Continuing Studies, and Professional Development teams.

Oversee the budget and ensure fiscally responsible behavior of all team members.

Encourage and maintain collaborative efforts between the Learning Innovation and Lifelong Learning teams

Identify and support team members' professional development and advancement taking advantage of university-sponsored and industry- related programs

Direct various personnel functions including, but no limited to, hiring, merit recommendations, promotions, transfers, and vacation schedules

Communications and Outreach

Collaborate with the Marketing and Communication teams at Learning Innovation and AED to develop outreach plans to increase participation and awareness of educational opportunities in digital and print formats.

Orchestrate the development of the Forever Learning Newsletter with the assistance from program coordinators and directors.

Present to boards and committees, and represent Duke and its programs at conferences and other PCO-industry gatherings.

Provide exceptional customer service to program participants and leaders in person and in writing.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

A graduate degree in a related field such as education, adult learning, or higher education administration, PhD strongly preferred.

Experience

Minimum of 6 years of experience in lifelong learning or professional development, including experience in program development and management; or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
