Occupational Summary

Serve Duke Medicine Development and Alumni Affairs as member of the Vice President's Executive Team, developing and implementing strategic direction for DMDAA and its programs and participating in its management. Oversee resource management for DMDAA and manage Development Operations teams that provide expertise and services as an integral part of fund raising activity and success. Serve in an external capacity with a small portfolio of prospects, in developing volunteer boards and engagement opportunities for them, and in serving as President of the Ruth K. Broad Biomedical Research Foundation.

Work Performed

Participate in overall DMDAA management; provide counsel to DMDAA directors and staff.

Oversee, in concert with the Executive Team, pursuit of the objectives of the DMDAA FY12-17 Strategic Plan. On behalf of the Executive Team, guide the strategic planning process to continually improve the DMDAA organization, its business practices and its talent. Benchmark performance.

Develop strategic and operational plans for succession planning and implementation.

Oversee resource management for DMDAA, including recruitment, retention, training and succession of DMDAA staff, and financial management for annual operating as well as intermittent campaign budgets. Represent the VP in key budget, management (including retention, recruitment and performance issues), campaign communication and stewardship issues. With the VP and colleagues, develop new programs and opportunities for volunteer boards and development. Develop sophisticated opportunities for engagement of board members that include in depth education about Duke Med. Work with Executive Team and Direct Reports in developing new volunteer boards to advance external exposure and fund raising for the strategic priorities of the School of Medicine and other units.

Develop short and long term staff organizational development programs.

Oversee Development Operations programs that provide critical information, services and activities for successful fund raising. Direct reports include the Director of Communications, Director of Donor Relations and Special Events, Director of Research and Constituency Development, Director of Annual Giving Services, the Administrative Manager for HR, IT and office management, and the Business Manager. Provide strategic and operational direction for each program area, advise in program planning, facilitate collaboration and integration among operations staff and with fund raisers. Hire, orient, and mentor staff; evaluate performance.

Interface with a number of Duke University and Duke Medicine departments, staff, leaders.

As President and Executive Director, direct and manage the business of the Ruth K. Broad Biomedical Research Foundation, a support corporation of Duke with market value of assets of $12M. Manage the board of directors that includes external members as well as Duke faculty/leader members. Support the board chair in preparation for meetings and other Foundation business. Steward the Foundation's mission and strategic agenda, develop new programs, and oversee administrative functions including annual RFPs and selection for eight grant award programs. Maximize the opportunity for Duke awards/funding.

Manage a small portfolio of prospects/donors. Cultivate relationships, engage interest, solicit and close gifts, and provide stewardship.

Other duties as assigned.

It is expected that all above responsibilities will be completed in complete cooperation with various colleagues throughout Duke Medicine Development

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program. Advanced degree preferred.

Experience

Minimum of ten years of successful experience in managing development programs and staff, developing successful fund raising relationships, and working with volunteers - preferably in an academic setting.
