Occupational Summary

Reporting to the Senior Executive Director of Foundation Relations and Corporate Giving, the Senior Associate Director is responsible for planning, organizing, and managing Duke Health's relations with private philanthropic foundations as well as corporate foundations. The Senior Associate Director works with many of the top Foundation donors to Duke Health. As part of a comprehensive program for foundation and corporate fund raising the position requires positive, productive, and ongoing interaction with senior administration of the Duke Health, faculty, volunteers and with senior representatives of regional and national foundations and corporations toward a primary goal of increased philanthropic support. The Senior Associate Director works with the Foundation Relations and Corporate Giving team, to seek out new opportunities from foundation and corporate sources that will be directed toward the priorities of Duke Health, and to design, organize, and implement strategies for building successful and lasting relationships with these institutional donors. This is a gift-focused position that will require excellent written and verbal communication skills, creativity, problem-solving, and persistence, and also will work closely with leaders and colleagues both in health and across the university to maximize gifts and minimize duplication of effort in a large, complex development program. The Senior Associate Director must be able to work with foundation leaders of the highest level.

Work Performed

Help fulfill the responsibilities of the Foundation Relations and Corporate Giving program as a core gift producing center for the Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs office, and in the context of an academic medical center with multiple points of interface with foundations and corporate philanthropy, the Senior Associate Director will work to maximize philanthropic gifts from those sources to Duke Health.

Develop and maintain relationships with assigned foundation and corporate prospects, managing the prospects in the senior associate director's portfolio, ensuring that information about their current giving strategies is current and that Duke Health is capitalizing on opportunities for philanthropic support. These relationships will be recorded through a moves management system that follows the full development cycle from identification through stewardship.

In addition, the Senior Associate Director manages several key relationships with top foundation prospects and donors. These relationships can be at the highest level of the foundation or corporate entity. This includes assisting with The Duke Endowment, the largest donor to Duke Health.

Works with University Development on key relationships for Duke Health, where there are joint or multiple university relationships.

Identify opportunities for site visits by corporations and foundations, and work with Senior Executive Director to coordinate and staff the resulting visits. Also, identify opportunities for Duke Health leadership visits to foundations or corporations. Identify objectives for the visits, brief participants effectively and thoroughly, and ensure appropriate follow up.

Working with the Senior Executive Director, the Senior Associate Director works closely with colleagues within DHDAA on the identification of new foundation prospects for Duke Health priorities. The Senior Associate Director also is a key part of the development of strategy of these prospects.

The Senior Associate Director works with the directors for, Leadership and Principal Gifts and Development Research on the preparation of briefings and background information for leadership of DHDAA and Duke Health.

Through collaboration with the program and research staff of Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs, identify and qualify prospects for stated fund raising priorities as assigned by the Senior Executive Director or as requested by administration, faculty, or senior development staff. The identification and qualification process will involve a system of clearance for corporate and foundation prospects for both Duke Health and the University, and may involve both new and known prospects.

Prioritize and design strategic approaches, and cultivate and solicit prospects for philanthropic support. This broad responsibility will include significant writing and editing responsibilities, as well as critical and sensitive analysis of best outreach practices, both for philanthropic and corporate foundations. In addition, it will include developing content for strategic approaches to prospects, developing briefings and proposals, submitting proposals, and following up on proposal submissions and awarded projects.

To fulfill the responsibilities of the Foundation Relations and Corporate Giving program as a service center to Duke Health administrators, faculty, and senior development staff, the Senior Associate Director will work as a team member, along with the Senior Executive Director and other team members, to facilitate effective research, coordination, monitoring of approaches and stewardship across Duke Health and the University.

Participate in the maintenance of internal systems to include the development-wide database, as well as the unique foundation and corporate logs kept by the office.

Assist with research and reporting requirements, as requested by the Senior Executive Director or other leadership in the development office.

Work with the Foundation Relations and Corporate Giving team members to insure that activities are coordinated with Duke Health's Office of Research Administration or Office of Sponsored Programs, as needed.

Contribute to the daily management of the Foundation Relations and Corporate Giving support staff.

Maintain tickler system that ensures timely progress reports are submitted to grant making organizations as required by the organizations and as it fulfills professional stewardship standards.

Other research and service responsibilities, as assigned.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program. Masters degree preferred.

Experience

Work requires seven years' experience in fund raising, grant writing, alumni affairs, public relations, marketing or a related field in order to acquire skills necessary to administer, coordinate and/or participate in a foundation and corporate fund raising program. Experience in a complex, multi-tiered work environment is preferred, as is experience in an academic medical center, in another academic setting, or in a healthcare environment. Must be willing to provide writing samples for an interview.
