Occupational Summary

The Director for Facilities Management is a dynamic leadership role responsible for overseeing and providing strategic direction for various operational areas within the Facilities Management Department. This position is accountable for ensuring the efficient and effective delivery of facility and utility services to support the Duke campus community, encompassing academic, research, student support, office, healthcare, and parking facilities. The Director is part of the department's leadership team, and actively leads the development and execution of departmental and unit strategic initiatives.

Work Performed

Provide leadership and oversight of the Facilities Management Department teams and units responsible for various operational and functional areas.

Lead and implement efforts to develop and departmental and unit goals and strategic initiatives.

Provide administrative oversight to ensure the seamless operation of facility maintenance responsibilities.

Identify opportunities for continuous quality improvement in facilities management service areas and initiate improvements.

Provide oversight of facilities management unit, fostering a positive work environment and promoting professional growth.

Address personnel issues, including hiring, coaching, discipline, and matters related to union contracts.

Identify skills gaps within staff, provide coaching and guidance, and participate in the annual performance appraisal process.

Promote professional development opportunities and lead ongoing training programs.

Consistently strive to ensure a safe work environment through education, assessment and demonstrated observance of sound safety practices.

Manage budget expenditures for unit; monitor unit expenditures to ensure budget compliance.

Build and maintain strong working relationships with collective bargaining units where applicable.

Advise senior leadership on all matters relating to their assigned unit.

Act as a representative of Facilities Management in internal meetings, committees, and when engaging with external groups and individuals as needed.

Develop, recommend, and implement strategies and programs to enhance operational efficiency and performance.

Ensure that facilities meet University regulations and maintain a high standard of excellence.

Regularly evaluate work output for quality, efficiency, and timeliness.

Prepare comprehensive reports on the progress of activities within unit area, ensuring transparency and accountability.

Perform other related duties as assigned by the department leadership

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires a Bachelor's degree in a Facilities Management field.

Experience

Work requires 15 years experience in Facilities Management or related field, including progressive leadership experience.
