Occupational Summary

The role is responsible for creating, implementing, and sustaining innovation and partnership initiatives for Duke University School of Medicine and specifically, the strategic priorities for clinical and translational research. He/she will work closely with the Vice Dean of Clinical Research and other executive leaders to prioritize institutional initiatives in innovation and partnership within and external to the SOM including, strategy, planning, joint ventures, business development and SOM innovation portfolio. The person will develop effective relationships with colleagues across Duke Health and Duke University and key academic, administrative and other stakeholders external to Duke. He/she will develop sources for, and benchmark other organizations to support the development of innovative programs or services, assessing the field to identify emerging trends, and recommending new initiatives to grow the organization.

Work Performed

Strategy and Implementation:

Develop and implement planning processes for the organization's vision, strategy and direction towards innovation and partnership in clinical research continuum including short and long-term strategies and metrics.

Develop the strategic plan for finances and policies for coordinated effort of clinical research for Duke entities (DOCR, DCRI, Dept Population Heath Sciences, CTSI and Center of Health Data Science).

Monitor and analyze institutional effectiveness through evaluation tools and dashboards for clinical research.

Monitor and analyze environmental trends related to clinical research.

Plan and provide oversight of a portfolio of special projects.

Partnership:

Engage effectively with key stakeholders to ensure delivery of project outcomes.

Analyze existing and proposed cooperative ventures, industry partnerships from a strategic perspective and in close partnership with School of Medicine's executive leadership team.

Partner with Vice Deans to explore options for funding strategic initiatives in research.

Partner with other Duke Health executives and faculty to advance SOM initiatives such as in data sciences, translational science, population health, outcomes research and health policy

Innovation:

Liaise with the Duke Health clinical enterprise in planning and implementing innovation portfolio for the School of Medicine.

Partner with the Dean and her senior executive team in strategy and execution for the innovation portfolio and related projects.

Other:

Evolving responsibilities based upon needs of Vice Dean for Clinical Research, Dean of School of Medicine and other senior executives.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires an MBA.

Experience

Ten (10) or more years of increasingly responsible strategy and leadership experience, with a proven track record in strategic planning and business development.

Skills

Experience in higher education including a comprehensive and thorough understanding of all elements of academic health systems.

Ability to effectively respond to elements that drive competitive advantage under dynamic conditions, such as health care industry changes, competitor actions, legal/regulatory changes, innovation and technological trends.

Comprehensive working knowledge of organizational planning and organizational structure.

Sound financial management experience with budgetary responsibilities and ability to interface with decision support functions.

High level of relationship-building and management and networking skills.

Strong relationship builder with the ability to find common ground, build consensus and strengthen collaboration among diverse stakeholders.

Ability to organize, analyze and interpret complex scientific, business and technical data, while balancing the needs of multiple projects.

Ability to successfully navigate in a fast-paced, outcomes-driven, entrepreneurial academic environment.
