Occupational Summary
Manage claim, underwriting and related activities in support of risk management operations. This position will regularly exercise independent judgment and discretion in work directly related to management policies or department business operations.
Work Performed
Investigate, negotiate, and settle or deny General Liability, Auto Liability, Directors and Officers and Complex Property Claims within authority level granted by Assistant Director. Provide assistance to University Counsel's Office on litigated claims.
Serve as primary point-of-contact with insurers. Provide adequate and timely notice of all incidents involving Duke assets or stakeholders to appropriate insurance carriers. Monitor claims activity for erosion of deductibles or retentions in order to maximize recovery to Duke.
Manage all subrogation activities related to claims to ensure establishment and protection of Duke's right to recover claim expenses when appropriate.
Analyze all automobile incidents or claims involving Duke drivers or vehicles for violations of Duke's Vehicle Safety Policy. Implement remedial follow up for employees and departments as needed. Analyze driving incidents and note and report on trends when applicable. Take appropriate corrective actions after consultation with the Director and Assistant Director.
Plan, coordinate and perform mandatory Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) claim reporting.
Support the insurance underwriting process. Identify, develop and maintain documentation of campus assets and exposures to loss. Compile and provide complete and accurate insurance applications and supporting documentation for all lines of coverage. Act as liaison for Duke personnel and departments as necessary to provide accurate and current risk details. Review and verify any changes in risk profiles and information that could affect coverage needs. Monitor the receipt of insurance binders and confirm all new and renewal insurance policies were issued based upon the brokers' and insurer's proposal and subsequent negotiations.
Monitor Duke's vendor relationships regarding risk management issues and analyze Outside Service Agreements and external contractors for compliance with Duke's standards. Provide Waivers of Insurance requirements for vendors when appropriate.
Monitor and evaluate communications from Duke and community resources to identify and address potential risks, incidents or outcomes.
Manage and maintain accurate claim data bases. Provide timely and correct loss runs to management, auditors, actuaries, brokers and insurers as appropriate.
Prepare reports and analyses highlighting claim trends, making appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
Collaborate in the development of tools, templates, formal procedures and other documentation to assist the Duke community in assessing and managing risk.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Work requires knowledge generally acquired through a bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Business Administration, or a directly related field. Professional certifications such as AIC, ARM and/or CPCU are desirable.
Experience
Work requires minimum of 5 years of experience in a claims, insurance, risk management or related setting to become knowledgeable of accepted practices involved in monitoring and managing insurance claims. Knowledge of or experience with commercial insurance and claims handling in insurance lines, such as general liability, automobile liability, automobile physical damage and property, is required.
