Occupational Summary

Administer, promote and manage all domestic and foreign subsidiary rights and permissions matters for Duke University Press books, to include negotiating the terms and contracting for the sale of subsidiary rights to other publishers.

Work Performed

Negotiate and prepare contracts with foreign and domestic publishers for the sale of subsidiary rights to include, co-publication rights, foreign translation rights, foreign territory rights, paperback rights, book club rights, electronic, and film rights.

Establish and apply an overall policy with regard to permissions for the use of materials published by Duke University Press (DUP) including use agreements and fees; identify issues where legal advice is needed.

Correspond with foreign publishers, agents, and editors in order to inform them of Duke University Press titles and their possible purchase of subsidiary rights to these titles.

Collaborate with editorial and marketing staff to prepare seasonal rights catalog for distribution to publishers, agents, and editors. Coordinate permissions and negotiate terms for reproduction of parts of Duke University Press books via printing, photocopying, or electronic reproduction; advise others at the Press about copyright and permissions matters; advise staff on complex copyright and permissions matter; consult with Director and senior managers on requests for comprehensive permissions; make recommendations to standardize comprehensive agreements.

Develop and maintain a database of permissions information. Prepare financial and operational reports and analyses reflecting progress, highlighting adverse trends, and offering recommendations or conclusions

Represent DUP at conferences and exhibits where subsidiary rights are a primary focus

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires organizational, analytical, and communications skills normally acquired through the completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Work requires two years editorial experience in a publishing or related setting to acquire skills necessary to perform activities associated with the negotiation and preparation of contracts with publishers, negotiation for the purchase of subsidiary rights, editorial review, and/or preparation of books for publication. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
