Occupational Summary

Responsible for executing a publications content and messaging strategy that supports key priorities, informs and engages internal and external stakeholders, enhances University and departmental standing, promotes key fundraising initiatives, and supports departmental core values.

Work Performed

Solicit books or journals for publication by acquiring new sources, determining financial and operational feasibility, growth potential, scholarly merit, and best fit for the University and the department.

Arrange for review of both existing and prospective books and journals by experts in the field.

Serve as a lead strategist and editor, overseeing editorial content creation and initiatives.

Prepare acquisitions and present projects to leadership for final publishing approval, and follow up on questions or suggestions as appropriate.

Serve as liaison between sponsors and/or editorial groups during all phases.

Propose, prepare, and negotiate contracts, outlining appropriate and pertinent information.

Align editorial themes and assets to the needs of target audiences. Work with departmental staff to ensure each publication is onboarded smoothly and efficiently.

Manage publishing relationships on an ongoing basis, ensuring that editorial and publishing contracts are fulfilled.

Strategically identify and follow trends and developments in all pertinent areas of publishing.

Represent the department in relevant public engagements.

Coordinate activities to develop and schedule priorities, including but not limited to; planning, maintaining, reporting, and managing financial arrangements.

Develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, in order to support acquisitions and relationship management.

Oversee the growth and development of special projects.

Supervise the activities of special publishing projects and staff.

Manage various personnel functions for these positions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, and vacation and other leave schedules.

Education/Training

Work requires high-level organizational, analytical, and communications skills acquired through the completion of a bachelor's degree program

Experience

This position requires a minimum of five years' publishing experience.
