Occupational Summary
The Assistant Dean of Duke Chapel will be an engaged, (com)passionate, thoughtful, and effective pastor who oversees and nurtures the ministries of the Chapel, particularly worship, community ministry, and student ministry and engagement, while creating a strong cohesive ministry staff team. In doing so, this person will participate in visioning, strategizing, and leading the enormous opportunities for impactful ministry, discovery, learning, and witness through the Chapel's ministries and their interface at Duke, in Durham, and beyond. This position will report to the Dean of Duke Chapel and serve as his key pastoral and ministry leader and partner on the Chapel staff and serve on the Senior Leadership Team.
Work Performed
Oversee and coordinate the Chapel's worshiping life.
Attend and chair weekly Ministers and Musicians meetings to help plan and implement Sunday morning worship and other worship-related activities as they arise.
Coordinate logistics for all Chapel worship services including Sunday morning, Evensong, Wednesday prayer, Thursday Vespers, and other special services such as Holy Week, All Hallows Eve, Blessing of the Animals, etc.
Set the presiding schedule for ministers for both Sunday mornings and for the weekly worship services.
Preside at Sunday worship on a regular basis and preach as invited.
Work with the Dean of the Chapel on the preaching calendar, including extending invitations to guest preachers.
Recruit and train lectors and communion servers and be the primary Chapel staff contact for worship volunteers including ushers, altar guild, money counters, etc.
Relate closely to various Duke departments for collaboration in University-wide worship and service.
Oversee and coordinate the Chapel's engagement with the wider community (Durham, Triangle, and beyond).
Attend faith community meetings for organizations such as Durham Congregations in Action and Religious Coalition for a Nonviolent Durham Community Roundtable and be available to participate in their activities, such as leading vigils.
Engage major city-wide initiatives and maintain a healthy understanding of a wide range of local and social issues.
Work with Congregation at Duke Chapel on key relationships within community and link closely with Congregation Council and Local Missions Committee.
Actively and regularly engage Office of Durham and Regional Affairs and the Duke-Durham Neighborhood Partnership.
Connect the Chapel and campus communities with opportunities to serve in Durham, with special focus on the West End.
Represent the Chapel on university committees and in partnerships related to community outreach.
Advise Duke Student Chapter of Habitat for Humanity.
Liaise with Duke Divinity School faculty and students and other university partners, as needed.
Oversee student ministry and engagement on campus (including Religious Life at Duke) and in the community.
Envision, strategize, and implement, along with other staff, ways to engage students in all of the ministries of the Chapel, including worship, community ministry, and music, particularly seeking opportunities to bridge faith and learning.
Meet with students individually for pastoral care as appropriate, especially in times of urgent need.
Supervise Chapel ministry staff and nurture an integrated ministry team, including:
Worship-related staff, including the worship intern, and volunteers. Community ministry-related staff, including Community Minister. Student ministry and engagement-related staff, including Lincoln minister, Director for Religious Life. Staff assistant for Chapel ministries.
Deputize for the Dean at moments when administrative, programmatic, or pastoral leadership is required and the Dean is unavailable, particularly representing the Dean at university and community events and meetings as required. Interact with senior university administrators as appropriate.
Serve as member of Chapel's Senior Leadership Team to help guide the mission and ministries.
Support the Dean on other projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Master's Degree required, with a strong preference for Master of Divinity or related field.
Experience
Five years pastoral experience preferred. Experience in academic and church settings strongly preferred.
