Occupational Summary
Oversee the daily activities and operations of the Division of Laboratory Animal care facilities. Manages through subordinate supervisors the coordination of the activities of a section(s) or department(s) with responsibility for results in terms of costs, methods, and employees. Act as advisor to subordinate(s) to meet schedules and/or resolve technical problems. Develop and administer budgets, schedules, and performance requirements. Frequently interacts with subordinate supervisors, customers, and/or functional peer group managers. May interact with senior management. Experience with animal care and surgical techniques. Insures Standard Operating Procedures and protocols are maintained and adhered to. Trains employees in proper laboratory techniques. Maintains quality checks on cleanliness of laboratories and animal rooms. Insures care and maintenance of the animals in the facility(s) according to Good Laboratory Practices.
Work Performed
Supervise Operations Managers:
Provide detailed job descriptions and conduct periodic performance appraisals based on facilities inspections and staff performance. Assign and assist with special projects. Promote career development. Provide guidance as requested on hiring, training, promotions, and disciplinary issues.
Coordinate activities among operations managers: Approve purchase of major equipment such as caging, equipment, and materials management supplies. Help ensure compliance with appropriate regulations and standards. Assist HR Manager with union contract compliance issues.
Assign DLAR animal housing space; Maintain database of DLAR animal housing capacity. Allocate available cage space to investigative/research staff. Make recommendations for increasing housing space.
Coordinate employee participation in DLAR Occupational Health and Safety Program: Act as liaison between Duke Occupational Health Office and the Division of Lab Animal Resources. Ensure that operations managers are enforcing the DLAR occupational safety policies regarding PPE and coordinate the Hearing Conservation Program.
Facilitate facility renovations and new construction project:
Review floor plans and become familiar with architectural design intent. Work with architects and Duke project managers from project conception through commissioning. Oversee staffing of new facilities. Recommend large equipment purchases such as cagewashers, autoclaves, automatic watering systems, and environmental monitoring systems. Recommend construction materials that are appropriate for animal research facilities. Identify areas where facility upgrades are necessary and obtain cost estimates for implementing improvements. Coordinate with Duke Engineering and Operations on preparation and completion of facility improvement projects.
Coordinate Division of Laboratory Animal Resource Technician Training Program: Hire and supervise a Division of Lab Animal Resources Trainer. Assure that the Division of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR) animal care technicians are properly trained in Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) and AALAS certification preparation. Work with operations managers to promote technician recognition programs and commemorating International Laboratory Animal Technician week.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Requires a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in animal science or veterinary services.
Experience
Requires a minimum of ten years of of lab animal experience to include a minimum of five years in a managerial role
OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
Requires RLATG Certification. CMAR certification preferred.
