Occupational Summary

Establish and execute strategic direction for the Controller's Division of Financial Services, ensuring collaboration and continuity across the entire Division. Represent the Controller's Division in various venues and on multiple project teams, to both customers across Duke and internal and external partners and constituents. Provide support and direction to the directors and staff of Accounting Systems Administration, Financial Reporting, Corporate Tax, Fringe Benefits Reporting and Global Support units. Provide support to VP Finance on various reporting initiatives, including but not limited to RACI, the Duke Forward Campaign, and University Staffing.

Work Performed

Ensure proper and consistent financial accounting methodology, techniques, and policies are adopted by the University and Health System, and used in operations. Ensure adequate plan to validate and maintain the general ledger system. Ensure efficient, accurate and effective fiscal month-end and fiscal year-end close processes, in collaboration with various management centers Ensure control procedures to authorize and validate access to data of the corporate financial systems.

Provide oversight to the annual external audit process and the compilation of the University's corporate and other GAAP financial statements

Ensure timely distribution of the University's financial statements and other financial data to all internal and external users, including the Board of Trustees and senior management.

Provide oversight to the annual fringe benefit development process in collaboration with DUHS Corporate Finance, Human Resources and Cost &Reimbursement.

Ensure annual over/under recovery is well articulated to all impacted parties and factored in to future fringe rates as necessary.

Provide oversight to Duke's compliance with federal, state and local tax compliance as well as our non-resident alien ITIN process.

Provide support to international tax positions taken with respect to foreign initiatives.

Provide support to newlycreated Global Support unit to establish processes for supporting departments in international endeavors. Serve as single point of contract to departments and facilitate risk analysis to determine necessary infrastructure to safeguard against risk of noncompliance.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Requires a bachelor's degree in accounting, business, or related field combined with the successful completion of a certified public accountant status or an equivalent designation. Completion of an advanced degree is preferred. An in-depth knowledge of GAAP, financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), and federal compliance requirements is required.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of five years of public accounting experience, preferably specializing in higher education, and significant experience related to accounting/financial management in a university environment.
