Occupational Summary
The Associate Vice President (AVP) of Campus and Business Services reports directly to the Executive Vice President. The AVP of Campus and Business Services has significant operational leadership responsibilities including: Parking and Transportation, Campus Mail Services, Duke Stores, and the Duke Faculty Club. The role also involves administrative and financial leadership responsibilities for the University's Trademark and Licensing program, Central Administration Management Center (~$600M annual budget) and other financial services (e.g., allocation of space and G&A costs, University budget development processes, etc.)
Work Performed
The AVP Campus and Business Services serves the University, Duke University Health System (DUHS), and its employees through strategic vision, advising and partnering with leadership across Duke. This collaborative work will advance the successful achievement of critical initiatives that support the strategic priorities of the University and Health System.
Responsibilities include:
Lead the development and implementation of effective campus and business operational policies that support the strategic priorities of the University and Health System. Ensure that the University's operations are performed in accordance with federal and state law as well as the University policies and procedures.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance service quality and operational efficiency. Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and customer-centricity within the campus and business services units.
Oversee and provide strategic direction to Parking & Transportation, Campus Mail Services, Duke Stores, Duke Faculty Club operations, Budgets & Business services, and Trademark and Licensing - leading a team of ~ 235 full time employees and over $75M budget.
Cultivate and manage strategic partnerships to optimize and monitor performance and service levels for:
Parking services for the University and DUHS, including garages and surface lots. Work collaboratively with the Duke University Health System leadership and the University Deans on various parking matters.
Transit services for the University and DUHS, encompassing over 200k riders/month.
Work with Parking & Transportation service leadership to continually improve customer service and maintain good working relationship with union leadership.
Mail services for the University and DUHS, encompassing all incoming flat mail, bulk mail, and over 150k packages delivered annually.
Official retailer for Duke, including campus and medical center bookstores, Athletics team store and merchandise concessions, computer store, textbook program, vending, as well as three hospital store locations.
Management of the use of Duke"s names, logos, and trademarks worldwide, including Duke branded merchandise and licensing.
Operating the Duke Faculty Club.
Provide financial oversight for Central Administration Management Center (CAMC), including establishing annual budget targets and communicating any actual variances to senior leadership and the Board of Trustees.
Oversee the University's annual budget development processes (operating & capital), including the consolidation of the annual budget and five- year capital plans for review and approval by the Board of Trustees.
Oversee the allocation of space and G&A costs across the University and DUHS, ensuring transparency of the statistical methodologies being used to distribute associated costs to payors.
Participate on the EVP's Finance Group, providing advice on Duke's finances and non-traditional moves, cuts, reorganizations to protect academic program needs.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Requires Bachelor's degree in business, finance or accounting with strong preference for an MBA or advanced degree in finance. CPA certification strongly preferred.
Experience
Work requires a minimum of ten years of experience leading and managing financial and business operations in a large and complex university setting, and experience managing a variety of campus operations functions.
