Occupational Summary

The Director of Communications, Duke Dining is responsible for leading, developing and implementing comprehensive strategic communication plans, policies, and processes that result in content that effectively support the division's communications priorities, across multiple media formats.

Work Performed

Develop marketing plans and strategies for the department; formulate long range plans for marketing activities; create strategies for the introduction of new goods and services or the expansion of existing services; participate in overall departmental strategic planning and management activities. Plan, develop, coordinate and participate in various marketing research activities to identify customer preferences and attitudes and to enhance products and services and develop program planning/recommendationsto address identified priorities. Create and maintain a cohesive dining voice in all print, signage, digital and social media content which supports and effectively reinforces dining programs in alignment with Duke Dining's mission to be a national leader in the provision of comprehensive dining services to the university community.

Ensure/conduct market research to determine customer needs and impressions of department goods and services; design survey instruments and coordinate the collection of data; compile information, analyze results and prepare reports setting forth customer attitudes and trends and appropriate marketing recommendations and conclusions. Maintain liaison with Duke Dialogue, the Chronicle, University Relations, professional trade publications, and with other representatives of the media to place articlesin local, regional and national newspapers and magazines; provide photographs to the news media. Ensure research ofother university dining programs to find effective ways to communicate info, current marketing and food trends, best practices, website development, mobile app updates, programs and special events, hot topics. Ensure research of campus departments to explore how a collaborative relationship can benefit Duke Dining.

Design advertisements; prepare press releases and articles; develop, write, edit and lay out departmental publications; coordinate with printers and other personnel to ensure publications are printed on schedule and according to budgetary and other requirements. Develop and create department marketing pieces to include: a First-Year Dining Brochure, an all-encompassing Duke Dining marketing folder. Create the design of promotional materials in multiple formats to include: table toppers, Campus Screens, Newsletter, Website, Posters, Banners, Newspaper, Print Advertising, Duke Events Calendar, Blog, Social Media, Photography, Videography. Create web pages, edit current pages, and monitor online activity. Edit and supervise design of departmental websitePlan and organize various departmental activities and public relations events to promote goods and services; prepare and deliver presentations to promote the goals of the department. Create events that further the Student Affairs goal of enhancing the student experience with education and exploring interests outside of the classroom such as Chef's Chatter, and monthly themed dinners, monthly menu promos, sustainability tabling events. Collaborate with University departments to achieve marketing objectives.Create multiple events throughout the academic year to promote Duke Dining's nutrition and well-being initiatives. Create programming events to provide students with opportunities to engage with Duke Dining team members to learnmore aboutDuke Diningandthe services and programs offered. Develop and oversee The Chef's Kitchen Programming: Chef Demos-Coordinate 6 chef demos each year, research and vet chefs, communicate financials, develop a marketing plan, develop creative for marketing, develop registration process for students, oversee recipe development process, coordinate with staff the needed equipment & ingredients, supervise "Day Of" preparation; Develop cooking class schedules (2) 5-6week cooking classes and (5) single-day classes, Createsyllabus and meeting times, develop a marketing plan, develop creative for marketing, develop registration process for students, communicate financials, oversee recipe development process, coordinate with staff the needed equipment & ingredients, supervise "DayOf" preparation. Determine fiscal requirements and prepare budgetary recommendations; formulate and manage the annual marketing and advertising budgets.

Effectivelyand strategically plan and deploy contractor and internal student/intern skill sets to provide support for the day to dayactivities of the marketing/communications efforts, to include budgetary planning/oversight as well as planning and supervision of effort. Determine fiscal requirements; prepare budgetary recommendations; monitor, verify, and reconcile expenditure of budgeted funds. Prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, trends and appropriate recommendation or expenditure ofbudgeted funds. Supervise market research interns, students and other marketing support positions in conducting and tabulating surveys, as well as in the areas of design, graphic arts, photography and the use of desktop publishing computer software; supervise the design and production of marketing and communications materials, including advertisements, flyers and posters to ensure proper focus, quality and content. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

The position requires completion of a bachelor's degree program in Journalism, Communications, English or a related discipline.

Experience

Requires at least 5 years experience in writing,public relations, communications or related disciplin
