Occupational Summary

The director of Workers' Compensation is responsible for leading the design, development, implementation and monitoring of program strategies, aligned policies and supportive procedures that ensure a safe workplace culture across Duke. The director is responsible for the development, recommendation, implementation and monitoring of policies and procedures that ensure annual program, financial, workplace safety, claims costs and lost time injuries goals.

Work Performed

Develop strategic plans and annual operating goals that ensure integration of workers' compensation strategies and initiatives with other programmatic efforts such as Risk Management, Employee Safety, Employee Occupational Health, absence management.

Recommend and implement approved strategies to ensure goals are achieved; monitor performance against approved strategies and goals.

Routinely analyze and report performance against established targets, utilizing trend analysis and experience data. Ensure effective management of policies, strategies and financial resources to ensure claims expenses do not exceed established targets.

Design, assist with and ensure effective delivery of managerial information and supervisory training to ensure effective policy compliance regarding workers' compensation.

Prepare active and timely reports for appropriate regulatory agencies as required by applicable regulations and statutes. Provide regular performance and career development coaching and counseling to members of the Workers' Compensation department, including yearly written performance evaluations with clearly articulated expected job behaviors and results. Work with operating unit colleagues across HR, Finance, and operating units.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires a bachelor's degree and AISC course work designation or CPCU designation. A graduate degree in business or closely related field preferred. Law associate designation preferred.

Experience

Work requires at least 10 years of Workers' Compensation experience, with at least 4 years of leadership and management experience in a large, complex, multi-line of business organization.
