Occupational Summary

Manage and functionally direct a core scientific resource that provides clinical and technical related services to Duke Medical Center and other affiliated research groups. Ensure exceptional service to the research community in a timely, economical, and efficient manner. Ensure specialized laboratory techniques with impeccable documentation and work standards.

Work Performed

Responsible for the scientific output of the Flow Cytometric, Cell Culture or Transgenic facility through the management of research specialists and technicians.

Develop and manage annual operating budgets for respective facility. Serve in a financial management role for the facility.

Train and instruct research staff within Cancer Center facility area of responsibility. Direct day to day activities of staff, as well as the project management goals of the facility. Interact with Principal Investigators and source appropriate scientific literature necessary to provide exceptional service and to design experimental framework for clinical research. Utilize effective project and resource management needed for successful operation and service. Interact with customer.

Oversee the purchase of flow cytometers, related supplies, reagents and equipment. Operate flow cytometers; oversee installation and maintenance; design, evaluate, modify flow cytometric protocols. Manage the cell culture procedures through established protocols and develop and test protocols for new technical services.

Manage all aspects of services that render genetically engineered mice for Cancer Center members and others affiliated research groups.

Gather and analyze data and trends to determine short-term and long-term financial and organization implications. Implement changes, restructure and improve services for research community and improve the financial position of the CCF.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor of Science in Biology, Chemistry or Animal Science.

Experience

5 to 7 years of related Lab Research Analysis. Ability to communicate clearly in oral and written form. Ability to work with information systems, automated and technical equipment.
