Occupational Summary
Direct and facilitate the development, commercialization and transfer to practical uses of technologies and inventions originating in all University laboratories in a manner consistent with University policies and values; provide oversight to all University functions, activities and units that participate in the technology transfer process.
Work Performed
Develop, clarify or redefine University patent policy; create an awareness of and an appreciation for the purpose and benefits of such a policy among the faculty; encourage a wider participation by faculty in the transfer of technology under the University patent policy.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty at Duke who are involved in research; assist faculty in the preparation of documentation necessary to effect the transfer of technology.
Develop strategies and means to maximize the appropriate commercial application of university research capacities.
Establish and negotiate research collaborations between the university and corporations in consultation with University Counsel and other appropriate university personnel.
Develop the means to select, prepare, and file patent disclosures and applications.
Market intellectuals property directly and through other agencies (e.g. TULCO).
Collaborate with DUMAC and other appropriate university entities in the formation of start up companies or other ventures based on university technology.
Interpret and advise the President, on all University Policies that impinge on the technology transfer process or are affected by it.
Monitor the functions, interests and responsibilities for technology transfer among various University organizational units on the campus, in the Medical Center and at Duke Management Company.
Recommend to the President and the Patient Committee any changes in policy or new policies that may be required to facilitate its mission.
Direct various personnel functions including, but not limited to, hiring performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
A master's degree or doctorate in science, engineering, business, finance, higher education, or related field is required.
Experience
Minimum of 10 years of combined experience in primary research and progressive management roles in research administration at an institution of higher education.
