Occupational Summary

The Assistant Dean of Information Technology provides leadership and guidance in the planning, development, and use of information technology (IT) to support faculty, students, and staff in fulfilling the research, teaching, and outreach missions of the School.

Work Performed

Develop overall IT strategy and long-range plans to provide adequate, accessible, and secure computing and information facilities to faculty, students, and staff.

Anticipate IT implications of School programs, development, and strategies; research plans, programs, and services to enhance the School's mission via the use of technology. Incorporate external IT development and change into School practices and policies efficiently and effectively.

Oversee IT resource use, including developing and administering IT capital and operational budgets, software licenses, service contracts, and maintain appropriate vendor relations. Supervise, develop, and assess IT staff, and implement, maintain, and direct school-wide computing systems and network infrastructure. Maintain computing standards relative to an overall strategy to provide an appropriate degree of standardization in a multi-platform, multi-campus environment.

Solicit input from the School community on IT growth, plans, and priorities; report regularly to School Dean on IT activities and plans, serve as ex officio chair of the Technology Advisory Committee. Recommend and prioritize procedural improvements; anticipate future departmental needs, including the inclusion of IT in the curriculum and the development of instructional and audiovisual technologies.

Represent the School on various University committees; coordinate IT initiatives between the School and other University departments and schools as appropriate; maintain liaison with representatives of other University systems to ensure use of current principles and techniques. Participate in and contribute to national higher education IT organizations.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in mathematics, computer science, or a computer-related field, or equivalent course work or technical training to supplement a 4-year degree.

Experience

Work requires five years of related senior experience including enterprise IT resource and project management, staff supervision, and strategic planning, preferably in an educational setting.
