Occupational Summary

The Associate Dean, EDI Basic Sciences will provide leadership and broad strategic vision for all areas related to diversity in graduate education and postdoctoral training in the Duke School of Medicine. The AD will advise the Vice Dean of Basic Sciences, to whom he/she will report directly, and will also be expected to coordinate with and receive guidance from the School's Chief Diversity Officer to ensure alignment with broader diversity and inclusion strategy and initiatives. The AD will partner with basic science departmental leaders, and support faculty in their efforts to promote student success. The AD will oversee staff who will work to create and maintain a strong and supportive community for underrepresented PhD students and postdoctoral fellows in the Basic Sciences of the School. He/she will coordinate with faculty and other units to provide relevant academic programs, professional development activities, and wellness programs in collaboration with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. The AD and staff will also collect data to enable assessment of the impact of these efforts on the Duke community.

Work Performed

1. Leadership on diversity and inclusion in graduate and postdoctoral training

Advise the Vice Dean for Basic Sciences on all items related to diversity. Remain abreast of national landscape and research on most effective practices and adapt that knowledge to Duke. Contribute intellectual leadership on diversity and inclusion in graduate training. Identify areas of current weakness and propose course of action. Liaise with leadership groups (Basic Science Chairs committee, Medical Center Executive Committee, School of Medicine Inclusion Council, Diversity and Inclusion departmental leads, Basic Science Faculty Steering Committee) and interface with departments, T32 directors, and Directors of Graduate Studies to promote best practices for diversity and inclusion.

2. Recruitment and Admissions

Advise leaders (T32 Directors, Chairs of Admissions) on developing innovative and wholistic recruitment strategies. Work with basic science admissions committees to avoid bias and promote best practices that align with and are informed by the Office of Diversity & Inclusion. Interview prospective students and assist in recruitment of underrepresented students.

3. Training Grants

Provide leadership and consultation to address all diversity-related items for T32 grants.

4. Community Building

Identify and address student needs. Provide vision and intellectual content for programmatic initiatives.

5. Assessment

Perform a landscape analysis of basic science departments; analyze data and determine trends to inform programmatic educational practices. Partner with assessment offices at Duke in collaboration with the School of Medicine's Diversity and Inclusion Research Analyst to interpret data and evolve the mission. Disseminate outcomes.

6. Manage staff

Supervise staff who will:

- enact specific programmatic initiatives (e.g. Early Start) to promote underrepresented student recruitment and success

- collect, evaluate, and assess data related to diversity in graduate education at Duke.

7. Develop faculty training initiatives

Work with faculty to design and implement diversity-related trainings; identify relevant instructional topics; develop professionalism guidelines and professional development activities for faculty with regard to mentoring diverse students.

8. Raise external funds

Write grants to raise funds from internal and external sources to support the programs discussed above.

9. Partner with departments and programs on strategic goals

Work with program leaders, including individuals identified as diversity leaders in each program, to develop and implement diversity strategic plans in alignment with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

10. Serve as a consultant to address cultural climate issues

Utilize Diversity and Inclusion expertise to assist basic science departments and programs in addressing specific climate issues and sensitive topics that may arise, partnering with faculty, leaders, student and faculty ombuds, and other relevant parties to resolve tensions.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

PhD in a basic or biomedical scientific field required.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of six years of relevant experience in diversity and inclusion initiatives, with administrative experience in an academic environment preferred.

Work requires experience-based knowledge of diversity and inclusion and graduate education, as well as analytical, communications, interpersonal and organizational skills. Must have a demonstrated record of advancing programs and services which enhance institutional goals related to student access, equity, diversity and engagement. A broad understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion and demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse constituents is required. Direct experience working to positively impact diversity in STEM is highly desirable. Experience in leadership and public speaking desirable.
