Occupational Summary

The Associate Dean of Research Engagement plays a strategic leadership role in fostering a vibrant and inclusive research culture across the School of Medicine. This position is responsible for designing, implementing, and overseeing initiatives which actively engage faculty, trainees, and staff in the research enterprise. The Associate Dean will serve as a key liaison between the SOM Office of Community, Engagement, and Impact, Basic Science departments, and other School institutional partners focusing on increasing collaboration, community-building, and supporting a vibrant research environment through strategic visioning and support, educational programs and outreach initiatives, and scientific workforce development.

Work Performed

Leadership and Strategic Planning: ??? Develop and implement strategy for research engagement across the School of Medicine with a focus on the Basic Science departments. ??? Collaborate with department chairs and Culture leaders to identify and support unit-specific priorities to maximize engagement of students, faculty, and staff.

Engagement Programs and Initiatives: ??? Lead initiatives to enhance the participation of faculty, students, and staff in research activities ??? Create and manage programming (e.g., seminars, workshops, networking events) that fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, promotes research engagement, and education regarding the importance of inclusive excellence in research.

Faculty and Trainee Development: ??? Support faculty and trainee development through research-focused training, proposal development workshops, and collaborative opportunities. ??? In partnership with the Office of Biomedical Graduate Education, collaborate with graduate programs to integrate research engagement into student learning and career development. ??? Partner with faculty affairs and other offices to ensure equitable access to research engagement opportunities. ??? Administer the Biosciences Collaborative for Research Engagement (BioCoRE) Program. BioCoRE supports PhD trainee engagement by providing a platform for scientific identity development through community- building activities, mentoring, academic support, and career development.

Funding and Resource Development: ??? Identify and pursue internal and external funding opportunities to support research engagement. ??? Assist faculty and trainees in identifying grant mechanisms related to research engagement, collaboration, and mentorship.

Partnerships and Outreach: ??? Strengthen connections between the School of Medicine and institutional, regional, and national research networks with particular focus on talent development and recruiting individuals into graduate programs and faculty positions.

Assessment and Reporting: ??? Evaluate and monitor the effectiveness of engagement strategies using data-driven approaches. ??? Prepare reports, proposals, and presentations to communicate impact and advocate for resources to support research engagement. ??? Monitor progress on research engagement goals within the Basic Sciences and align efforts with the Office of Community, Engagement, and Impact broader SOM priorities.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

PhD in a basic or biomedical scientific field required.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of six years of relevant experience in diversity and inclusion initiatives, with administrative experience in an academic environment preferred.

Work requires experience-based knowledge of diversity and inclusion and graduate education, as well as analytical, communications, interpersonal and organizational skills. Must have a demonstrated record of advancing programs and services which enhance institutional goals related to student access, equity, diversity and engagement. A broad understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion and demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse constituents is required. Direct experience working to positively impact diversity in STEM is highly desirable. Experience in leadership and public speaking desirable.
