Occupational Summary

Assist foreign students, faculty, staff, and employees of Duke University, Medical Center, and Health System in complying with governmental regulations related to the maintenance and processing of immigration and other governmental forms.

Work Performed

Manage and coordinate complex immigration and visa related functions (including Lawful Permanent Resident/green card petitions) for foreign faculty, staff, and students; ensure maintenance of proper status and process various forms including tax classification forms and extensions of time and permission to work requests; assess and process requests in order to issue documents using the U.S. Dept of Homeland Security's Student & Exchange Visitor System (SEVIS) and other federal databases.

Serve as a resource to faculty and staff members throughout Duke University, Medical Center, Health System, and affiliates regarding visa matters; answer non-routine and complex visa questions and resolve related problems. Routinely coordinates with faculty, staff, recruits, and students throughout the University, Medical Center & Health System in facilitating and maintaining lawful immigration status and employment authorization.

Maintain liaison with government agencies, sponsoring organizations, and foreign embassies to facilitate visa documentation and employment authorization for foreign students, scholars, faculty, staff, employees and their families. Represent Duke University, Medical Center, and Health System at regional and national professional meetings concerned with foreign student affairs.

Compile information and prepare various reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusions. Prepare required reports on foreign students, faculty, staff, and employees for various agencies (e.g. U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. State Department, etc.) and sponsoring agencies.

Plan, assign, check, and approve work performed by more junior staff. Assist in the training and instruction in methods and procedures. Assist in assessing performance of lower level employees.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires communication and analytical skills normally acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Requires 4 years of experience in a setting which provides exposure to complex compliance and/or regulatory functions, preferably with immigration and visa related functions in an academic, medical center, or university environment. Prefer at least 1 year of experience working directly with employment-based immigrant and non-immigrant petitions in an academic, medical center, or university setting. Prefer 1 year of experience living, working, or studying abroad, or similar experience with foreign nationals in the U.S.
