Occupational Summary

As the Executive Director for External Affairs and advisor, the person holding this position will provide leadership on matters related to: institutional communication; public relations; community relations; philanthropic development and alumni affairs and other efforts to improve awareness, and understanding and support of the School among the general public and key stakeholders.

Work Performed

Creates and implements a comprehensive development plan for fundraising that includes individual, corporate and foundation sources for gift generation while consistently increasing giving and the philanthropic base.

Proposes long and short-term institutional communication strategies to cultivate positive relationships between the School and its public.

Identifies groups and individuals who are important to the School and develops and implements means to reach them regularly in an effort to build the greater community and cultivate relationship to facilitate future donations to the School.

Prepares and implements an Annual Plan of Works and ensures that message development and effort prioritization are closely aligned with priorities slated in the strategic plan.

Provides oversight for volunteer boards responsible for alumni affairs and special constituency support.

Performs Advance Professional Tasks: Analyzes market research; writes and edits material in a variety of formats, among them reports, proposals, position papers, articles and speeches; chairs committees and leads work group; works one on one to solve problems; builds consensus and creates collaborations.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor's degree in communication, public relations, marketing or related field required. Masters or other advanced degree preferred.

Experience

Must have ten or more years of progressive responsibility in marketing, fund raising, communications or public relations. Requires demonstrated skill as an effective communicator and writer. Requires a proven track record of leading successful fund raising efforts. Successful candidate will have a demonstrated understanding of the relationship between communications and development.
