Occupational Summary

Direct the overall activities of the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Science & Policy Solutions. The Institute convenes science, social science, and policy research to develop independent strategic analyses of solutions to the most challenging and important environmental issues, and translates the research into effective presentations of policy options for government, for-profit, non-profit and corporate sectors. Serve the Nicholas School as Senior Associate Dean.

Work Performed

Direct the overall activities of the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Science & Policy Solutions.

Plan, direct and/or review new or major initiatives ensuring coordination with other departments, administrators, and personnel throughout the University as appropriate; develop comprehensive annual and long range plans consistent with Nicholas Institute of Environmental Policy Solutions (NIEPS) objectives.

Direct overall activities of a comprehensive external relations program to include identifying and cultivating relations with national and international figures, corporations and non-profits with interests in environmental science and policy, and bringing all parties together under NIEPS to support environmental research and communicate issues. Generate interest with these groups/individuals in supporting NIEPS financially and/or with research.

Direct public relations programs to include written materials, marketing activities and other communication efforts. Communicate the mission of the Institute to potential partner corporations or non-profits. Relate the importance and impact of environmental issues to both local and global audiences of varying background and understanding.

Engage the Duke community in environmental issues. Work closely with faculty at the Nicholas School and other professional schools. Plan and schedule work for the group ensuring proper distribution of assignments and adequate manning, space and facilities for subsequent performance of duties.

Determine fiscal requirements for the division and prepare budgetary recommendations; monitor, verify and reconcile expenditure of budgeted funds.

Direct various personnel functions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
