Occupational Summary

Oversee the Duke University School of Medicine Research Administration operation, which includes pre-award and award management functions. Advise School leadership on research policy. Establish information technology and data strategies related to research administration; provide guidance and direction on counsel investigators and staff regarding application strategies and on compliance with internal and external regulatory requirements.

Work Performed

Serve as a key advisor to School of Medicine leadership (Dean, Executive Vice Dean for Administration and Vice Deans for Research (clinical and basic science) in all matters related to research functions within the School of Medicine, including the performance of departments, centers and institutes. The Associate Dean will be expected to be well-versed in national trends in research policies, and be well-connected to best practices at peer research-intensive institutions.

Foster an environment of integrity in research by assuring that applications and awards are in compliance with applicable sponsor regulations and institutional policies. Advise the Dean and Vice Deans on risk management strategies, balancing compliance requirements with faculty burden.

Develop, plan, and implement activities to provide a proactive and supportive liaison function among faculty investigators, the various research support offices at Duke and external sponsors. Serve as an expert / thought leader for research administration issues in the School of Medicine and a major influence on efficient and effective research administration support across the institution.

Plan and implement strategies that achieve ongoing clarity of roles and responsibilities in research administration, streamlined business operations and continuous improvements in administrative functions and accountability.

Develop, implement and maintain standard operating procedures and policy for all aspects of research administration and enables research to comply with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.

Engage other internal (e.g., OARC, OSP, RCC, etc.) and external (federal, industry, private sponsors, etc.) organizational units to advance the School's research mission and to foster and facilitate strategies to enhance research competitiveness.

Develop and monitor institutional metrics to ensure the compliant, effective and efficient delivery of research administration support throughout the School of Medicine with emphasis on data consistency and integrity.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor's Degree in business, science or related field is required. Master's Degree is preferred.

Experience

Minimum of 10 years of experience with progressively responsible experience in a leadership position in sponsored research administration in a university or medical center setting. Proven success in directing the work of a large staff and providing effective management of a significant amount of external funding. Expertise in all phases of grant proposal development, including electronic proposal submission. General knowledge of Federal research compliance regulations including Uniform Guidance, CAS, and FAR.

Or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

Skills

Demonstrated understanding of a variety of research administration and compliance requirements and regulations

Business process analysis competencies including advanced topics with Excel and/or enterprise data management systems

Proven track record of active contribution to a senior management team, and providing strategic support across areas of responsibility

Excellent planning, management and coordination skills, with the ability to organize a demanding workload comprised of diverse and challenging tasks and responsibilities

Very strong attention to detail, problem solving skills, and ability to analyze trends

Demonstrated experience with evaluation of inefficiencies and the identification of creative and cost-effective alternatives

Excellent communication, management and leadership skills

Ability to work with diverse groups of people
