Occupational Summary

Direct the operations, safety programs and select agent programs within the Duke Regional Biocontainment Lab (RBL).

Work Performed

Lead the GHRB operations team and responsibile for day-to-day operation of the Regional Biocontainment Laboratory (RBL).

Interact with other entities within Duke to assure safe and consistent operations of the RBL, including but not limited to the following: Engineering and Operations, Housekeeping, Duke Police, Occupational and Environmental Safety Office, Employee Occupational Health and Wellness, and Division of Laboratory Animal Resources.

Organize and develop an agenda for weekly meetings of the GHRB operations team and biweekly meetings of the GHRB managers and PIs.

Interact with scientists, administrators, engineers, employee health, housekeeping, animal care workers, veterinarians, and human trial coordinators to assure safe research in the Duke RBL.

Participate with PIs and RBL Director in facilitation of general aspects of RBL operations.

Organize and maintain safety Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all aspects of DHVI research.

Organize safety training for all DHVI personnel to include both didactic components and proficiency demonstration.

Organize meetings of DHVI safety team.

Oversee the SERCEB (Southeast Regional Center of Excellence in Emerging Infections and Biodefense) and DHVI Select Agent programs to assure compliance with CDC, Duke, and DHVI standards.

Coordinate with DHVI administrators to verify safety compliance in collaborating institutions within the SERCEB and CHAVI (Center for Human AIDS Vaccine Immunology) programs.

Perform other duties as designated by the Director, Duke RBL.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Master's or Doctoral degree in a discipline related to biosafety. A candidate with a bachelor's degree might qualify with extensive experience.

Certified Biological Safety Professional OR eligibility to qualify for this examination and completion within a two-year period after hire.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of 5 years experience.

Biosafety experience required.

Biomedical research experience preferred.

Management experience preferred.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
