Occupational Summary

The Assistant Vice President is a senior level HR executive responsible for providing leadership in the strategic planning, implementation and evaluation of workplace efforts that contribute to positive and productive working relationships and a supportive work culture across Duke University and Health System. This position oversees the Duke University and Health System Staff and Labor relations HR team as well as the team for Staff and Family Programs. The AVP will effectively partner with senior leadership to ensure the alignment of staff and labor relations policies with the institutional goals and objectives.

Work Performed

Lead the annual and longer term planning, execution and evaluation of both strategies and tactics that ensures positive and effective staff relations, productivity and retention of the Duke workforce.

Lead the development of new and maintenance of existing Human Resource policies to ensure an effective work culture.

Oversee new programs, policies and initiatives that enhance the work culture, including such matters as employee recognition programs, flexible work strategies, recognition events, etc.

Plan, execute and evaluate the institutions labor relations strategy. Develop and guide efforts to strengthen labor/management relationships.

Establish goals and develop strategies to ensure attainment of labor relations goals, including serving as chief negotiator for institutional labor contracts.

Recommend, manage and coordinate various strategies and processes to assess employee attitudes and morale.

Ensure that HR representatives receive ongoing education in the field of Human Resources and that HR representatives are advocates of effective Human Resource practices for their employing units. Plan annual initiatives for the HR Manager's Institute.

Ensure effective collaborative planning and integration of staff/labor relations and work and family programs with other HR efforts.

Participate with other senior HR staff in overall strategic HR planning.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires a Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources, Labor Relations or a related discipline. A Master's degree, or other advanced degree is preferred.

Experience

Ten years of demonstrated HR management experience in a complex organizational setting is necessary. Experience in healthcare, research and higher education is highly desirable.

Skills

Significant professional management and leadership skills that demonstrate competency in strategic planning, implementation and evaluation.

Must be able to recognize and take advantage of opportunities and produce, quality, timely and high impact results.

Must be able to build coalitions/networks and partnerships that will maximize organizational effectiveness.

Must possess expert knowledge of labor laws, collective bargaining, Human Resources trends, programs, practices and procedures.
