Occupational Summary
The Associate Director, along with the Director of RIO, is responsible for managing various aspects of research-related conflict of interest (COI) at the individual and institutional levels. The Associate Director will work proactively and independently yet collaboratively with the Director and research faculty to identify and map complex research projects or programs involving COI. Responsibilities include ongoing assessment and continuous improvement of institutional policies, procedures, and workflows related to the identification and management of COI as well as oversight of RIO staff involved in COI identification and processing.
Work Performed
Serve as the senior reviewer for complex cases by conducting detailed assessments of the potential COI and develop potential options for COI management for presentation and discussion with the Director.
Participate as a non-voting member in SOM, Administrative and ICOI committees including the preparation and, at times, presentation, of case summaries to the committee(s). Serve as a committee resource on SOM/institutional policies and procedures.
Develop and maintain expertise about Federal and Institutional policies regarding COI; serve as Duke's Public Health Service (PHS) point of contact and liaison for reporting to PHS agencies such as NIH, CDC, AHRQ, DOD, etc.
Develop, implement, monitor and improve policies and procedures to ensure effective communication and management of research-related COI with OLV, ORA/ORS, OSP, IRB, and OARC;
Design and implement educational programs for research investigators and staff on COI-related federal regulations and institutional policies and procedures.
Monitor RIO's performance metrics and work with the Director on identified process improvements
Work with the SOM Office of Audit, Risk, & Compliance on regular audits of COI-related processes; design, implement and modify workflows and processes in response to recommendations.
Develop and implement a risk-based COI monitoring program
Work with the Office of Research Informatics to inform 1) further development and maintenance of the COI administrative database and related workflows, 2) integration with other research administrative systems, and 3) development of reporting capabilities for monitoring efficiency
Supervise and coordinate work of RIO employees involved in COI review processes and management to ensure appropriate distribution of resources.
Work with RIO's administrative manager to regularly review RIO's financial reports and develop, in conjunction with the Director, the annual operating budget to ensure fiscal responsibility.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Generally requires a Bachelor's degree
Experience
Work requires a minimum of 5 years of experience in research operations in a university environment involving federal and industry sponsors.
OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Skills
Must be capable of working independently with proven written and oral communications skills. Proven ability to work with faculty and institutional administration in a collaborative manner across organizational boundaries. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills are essential.
