Occupational Summary

Provide marketing leadership, expertise, consultation and brand strategy for the University and major University priorities and initiatives.

Work Performed

Manage and direct the Office of Marketing and Strategic Communications, overseeing all major University communications projects and managing external and internal communications vendors and contracts.

Serve as the chief marketing strategist for the University. Supervises staff, budget and operational authority for the Office of Marketing and Strategic Communications.

Works with senior academic and administrative leadership on University- wide initiatives and programmatic projects and determines marketing strategy.

Advise the Vice President for Public Affairs and Government Relations and other senior officers on brand, marketing and strategic communications issues.

Oversees selection and continued authorization of all major communications vendors and contracts. Provides oversight into University communications spending.

Assesses the current use of brand strategy and visual identity at the University, school, department and program level. Creates and disseminates an institutional brand Foundation/platform for all of Duke, including the University and its individual schools and institutes.

Develops and leads the process to review and update Duke's overall visual identity, create university-wide standards, and establish policies, procedures and structures to facilitate their adoption, and reviews requests for exceptions and customization from schools and units.

Coordinates large-scale, overarching marketing and strategic communications efforts directed towards prospective students through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, Financial Aid and in collaboration with the Office of Undergraduate Education.

Coordinates university-wide initiatives with brand and marketing strategies of Duke University Health System and other affiliated entities and stakeholders.

Consults with operating units to develop brand and marketing strategies that support identified communication goals; identify needs, objectives and design approaches; develop schedules and budgets as required for each project.

Provide operational oversight for the development and dissemination of broad strategic messages through print and electronic media. Develops and implements University-wide strategy for market and public opinion research.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, English or related discipline. Master's degree preferred.

Experience

Requires at least 10 years experience in communications, marketing, or related discipline. At least five years experience in strategic branding with academic institutions or similar organizations.
