Occupational Summary

The Vice President (VP) for Human Resources (HR) serves as part of the senior leadership group of Duke University and reports directly to the Executive Vice President. The VP, HR provides leadership for all Duke University and certain Duke University Health System human resources centralized services, with overall responsibility for planning, developing, and implementing enterprise-wide HR programs and strategies. As the University's chief human resources officer, the VP is responsible for leading human resources efforts for more than 43,000 employees in collaboration with vice presidents, deans, directors, department heads, faculty and staff. Human Resources provides exceptional service and support as part of the Duke University values: respect, trust, inclusion, discovery, and excellence.

Work Performed

The VP, HR serves the University, Health System, and its employees through strategic HR vision, advancing an equitable workplace culture of diversity and inclusion, and serves as partner to senior operations leaders.

Supports a culture where HR is accessible to the university's and health system's greatest asset: Its people.

Lead the development and implementation of effective human resource policies that support the strategic priorities of the University and Health System.

Ensure that the University's human resources operations are performed in accordance with federal and state law as well as the University policies and procedures.

Lead the University HR management team and provides guidance to successfully navigate complex work-related challenges and assist in resolution of these issues.

Works collaboratively with the Duke University Health System Chief HR Officer, as well as other senior level members of the DUHS executive team.

Oversees all benefit plan design and administration which include the Healthcare Plan Steering Committee, with health plan administration for more than 75,000 covered lives.

Serve as leader for various institutional initiatives, such as the recent COVID-19 response and oversight.

Supports the Board of Trustees (BOT) for HR initiatives and leads and implements BOT decisions for Executive Compensation Programs.

Facilitate legal collaboration from University Office of Counsel as appropriate.

Collaborate and provide strategic input for HR-related communications programs for all faculty and staff.

Provide leadership to continue to implement innovative human capital management strategies to recruit and retain a diverse workforce in an increasingly competitive market for talent. This includes effective leadership in the following areas: Talent Acquisition and Retention: Compensation and Benefits; Staff and Labor Relations; Learning and Organizational Development;and HR trends, metrics, and budget.

Lead University compliance with federal programs including ERISA, NLRA, FLSA, FMLA.

Serve as a partner for academic leaders on issues involving faculty members within the boundaries of faculty governance.

Serve as leader for HR support of international operations and research including Duke-Kunshan University (DKU), Governing Board roles for India and China.

Serve as committee member and/or chair the committee in areas which include Faculty and Staff Retirement Investment Committee; Employee Retirement Committee; Worker's Compensation Advisory Committee; DKU Finance and Administration Committee; DKU HR Committee.

Serve as a lead in labor union matters, including the collective bargaining process for Duke's four union contracts.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

A Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources or related field of academic discipline is required. An advanced degree and current HR certifications (SPHR, SHRM-SCP) are strongly preferred.

Experience

A minimum of 10 years of progressive senior level leadership in Human Resources, with a minimum of 5 years at an executive level. Experience in a large academic and health care setting strongly preferred. Demonstrated experience in strategic human capital and talent management at a senior level. A documented history of fostering an inclusive work culture, with focus on equity, diversity and inclusion programs.
