Occupational Summary
Serve as an Analyst within the Customer Solutions Team in Duke Health Technology Solutions' Analytic Center of Excellence (ACE) to assist analytics customers in deriving insights from enterprise data.
Using data obtained from the Health System's electronic health record and from other clinical and non-clinical sources as required, formulate and apply mathematical modeling and other optimizing methods to develop and interpret information that assists in answering clinical questions, in guiding clinical care delivery approaches, in improving quality and efficiency of operations in both care delivery and administrative areas of the business. May collect and analyze data, develop decision support models, or produce visualizations and reports therefrom. May consult with internal business partners on best approaches to realize these deliverables, and may train and otherwise support consumers of these deliverables.
Work Performed
Level 1: -Apply knowledge of health care and database management to analyze clinical data, and to identify and report trends. -Individual contributor that works under supervision.
Level 2 (In combination with Level 1): -Individual contributor that works under limited supervision. Applies subject matter knowledge; requires capacity to understand specific needs or requirements to apply skills/knowledge. -Maintains a level of exposure to external industry and market technical intelligence.
Functional Requirements Gathering
Level 1: -Gather and develop functional requirements for analytics activities, including coordination with business stakeholders, engagement with technical stakeholders to ensure functional needs will be met, and support of post-development testing and user acceptance.
Level 2 (In combination with Level 1): -Collaborate with key business stakeholders to determine business rules, needs, specifications, feasibility (workflow and resources), and priorities for highly complex analytics, development/acquisition requests and projects and according to organizational standards and processes. Consult with key business stakeholders on selection and acquisition of solutions. -Resource to others on the team regarding effective functional requirements gathering techniques/processes. -Where needed, assist functional stakeholders in documenting their current processes or recommend process change/renewal where needed to match best practices or simplify the complexity of a system deliverable.
Data curation & data visualization & data delivery
Level 1: -Ability to query data using programmatic tools (SQL, Python, etc.) and to represent data visually utilizing tools and techniques appropriate to the customer need. -Develop design documentation for data mapping and data transformation processes. -Document and recommend workflow changes, including technical / functional requirements, to generate essential data to support the business' analytical needs. -Obtain and maintain advanced understanding and knowledge of multiple data sources, data models, and related structures. -Resource to others on the team on use of data query & data visualization tools
Post-development testing and user acceptance
Level 1: -Develop user acceptance test cases mapped back to functional requirements to validate solution against functional requirements. Assist in coordinating user acceptance testing and other quality assurance activities.
Level 2 (In combination with Level 1): -Design and implement methods to ensure ongoing data quality of existing data solutions (change management, comparative benchmarks, etc.)
Model development Level 1: -Formulate mathematical or simulation models of problems, relating constants and variables, restrictions, alternatives, conflicting objectives, and their numerical parameters. -Perform validation and testing of models to ensure adequacy and reformulate models as necessary. -Present the results of mathematical modeling and data analysis to management or other end users.
Level 2 (In combination with Level 1): -Design advanced analytical solutions including attribution algorithms, validation rules, performance metrics, benchmarking, additive scoring, data segmentation, and subject identification;
Work management
Level 1: -Manage workflow and consistently meets agreed upon deadlines. Escalate issues, concerns and barriers to key project leaders. Assist and, as assigned, lead the prioritization of tasks/assignments. Develop and implement communication plans to all stakeholder groups and manages customer and stakeholder expectations. -Develop project-specific data management plans that address areas such as coding, reporting, or transfer of data, database locks, and work flow processes. -Monitor work productivity or quality to ensure compliance with standard operating procedures.
Level 2 (In combination with Level 1): -Optimizes internal resources to maximize team capabilities. -Effectively communicates specific IT issues/solutions to clients. -Review, understand and document the current operational processes and data sources to establish support for current and future reporting requirements. -Serve as technical resource for discipline in cross-functional teams.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Education:
Level 1: Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Statistics or Informatics Level 2: Master's degree in Quatitative Analytics, Statistics or Bioinformatics
Experience
Level 1: One year of relevant experience is required.
Level 2: Three years of relevant experience is required.
Skills
Level 1:
-Strong knowledge of research and analytic methods, statistics and presentation techniques. -Healthcare/research industry experience required. -Excellent analytical and problem-solving ability. -Excellent written and oral communication skills in a technical or healthcare environment. -Ability to work well in interdisciplinary groups, ability to present technical results to a non-technical audience.
Level 2: (In combination with Level 1) -Prior experience with clinical, EHR and/or administrative health data preferred. -Ability to handle a variety of projects and tasks simultaneously and prioritize competing deadlines. -Extensive working knowledge of modern data management and analysis software required. -Demonstrated expertise in presentation of analytic results a must-have.
