Adem was born in New Jersey and also spent time during his childhood in Ohio and Kenya, East Africa. Adem graduated from Miami University (OH) in 1998 with a BA in Architecture and received a Master's in City Planning from Georgia Tech in 2005. He spent 9 years in Atlanta, GA as an architectural consultant in the private sector working primarily on building and space programming and campus master planning jobs for numerous colleges and universities in the southeast. Adem has been at Duke University since 2007 in the Facilities Department working as the Assistant Director of Planning & Design. His primary responsibilities include facilities planning, building programming, space planning and campus planning along with overseeing campus GIS (geographic information systems) and CAD (computer aided design) files.
Adem and his wife, Asiya, live in Durham, and have an 11-year-old daughter and a 9-year-old son.
